To confirm the situation at Claremont. Yorkshire Archaeological Society
https://www.yas.org.uk/content/archives.html
From 1 October 2014 the Archives will be closed.

We are currently preparing our archive collections for transfer to the University of Leeds Special Collections. Regrettably, we are not able to answer any enquiries, undertake research and copy orders, or provide archive appointments. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

We plan that our archive collections will become accessible again in 2016 through the University of Leeds. Details of how to access YAS collections at the University of Leeds will be available later this year on our website.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Yes -- isn't this Kirklees Archives.

I discovered that a whole lot of old Parish records -- NOT registers, were stored here for Mirfield. Churchwardens accounts, Guardians records etc etc and employed a Professional Researcher to speed read them picking out any Illingworth records. (Also to check if MIs were there, which they weren't).

Cost me good money, but it was worth it to me in view of the time I would have spent travelling backwards and forwards and the sheer number of separate sets of records held.

Well there is WYAS Kirklees archives with the public library building and Huddersfield (Kirklees) Uni buildings Library/Archives

Illingworth - some MI's are outside the St Mary church on stone slabs stacked on top of one one another or in the steps half hidden.  ;D

Pennines: If it's any help, I have a book (in PDF format) containing Mirfield Registers from ancient 1500's to 1756.

Hi Brian,

Everybody on this Board is so very kind and helpful.

However I am such a 'nerd' that I have purchased, or have access to, the Mirfield (and every other parish I need!) -- registers. It's the other types of records that give me problems with not living in the area.

But thank you Brian -- and if I can ever help anyone with Lancashire records, please don't hesitate to ask. I would like to repay all your kindness if I can.

Regards June

My Great Great Great Granduncle (Thomas Nevin) was a curate at Mirfield in the 1860's and 1870's
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

I have a lot of Mirfield ancestors, many found from spending hours reading back through two centuries of parish records on Ancestry!  Interesting to hear of these other resources, thanks to those who have shared them. :-)

Hello Pennines,
The Huddersfield & District Family History Society have a VERY extensive collection of records on Fiche - far more than those published as booklets.  Why not give them a ring.  Their opening hours are on their website.
