I have recently learnt that I have Italian ancestry. Ancestors who I previously believed to be Irish actually had their Italian name anglicised. I am looking help or to be pointed in the right direction to further my research. So far this is what I have to go on:

Dominick Bonnina b1830 in Italy. (I have been told Caserta)
Appears in 1871 Scottish census living with wife Ann & sons Laurence and John (listed as being born in Ireland).
Name anglicised to Bonnon and then Bannon.
Sons moved to Belfast with John later returning to Glasgow.

I would love to be able to pinpoint where Dominick originally came from and when he arrived in Scotland/Ireland.

Hello,
Do you have any marriage details? Ann's maiden name?

Doesn't look as though you have 1881 census.

Thanks Heywood

I have been looking through the previous census's but I have been having trouble as the surname keeps changing. Unfortunately I have not been able to locate a marriage certificate although if John is listed as being born in Dublin, that is a good place to start.

Thanks Jaywit, I shall check it out

I was thinking that if you could trace a marriage, you could maybe get his father's name.
Civil registration did not begin until 1864 so John may/ not be included.
The info I transcribed only came from indexes rather than the actual census. Therefore, spellings may not be correct.
1891 shows a Stephen Regan born abt 1872, Dublin, lodging on Greenock. The age is out slightly. :-\

I was thinking you said that Dominic moved to Belfast but just read your post again.
If he died in Scotland, there will be quite a bit of information on the death certificate- should be place of birth and parents names.

He did die in Scotland, but I have been unable to find his death certificate  >:( But I know that there definitely is one, as I have spoke to a relative that has seen it and confirmed it is signed by his son John (who returned from Belfast to work for Dominick). I've hunted Scotlands people but I'm coming up with nothing...
