« on: Saturday 24 January 15 18:13 GMT (UK) »
Any help would be greatly received, I'm looking for info on Robert Morrow Gillies (my Great Granddad) I have been told that he was a Lance Corp in the 56th ?-light Company of the Royal Artillery from a lovely man on here but i cannot get any other info on him, does anyone have his full company name and or service no so that i can contact the relevant persons for details of what and where he served.

Kind Regards
Gill and Family

Hi Gill

I'm assuming you are trying to read an old letter or similar with that info written on it? If so can you post a picture of it?

Lance Corp is Lance Corporal which is the next rank up from Private. Interestingly the equivalent rank in the Royal Artillery is Lance Bombardier so I'm guessing the unit may be Royal Army Service Corps unit attached to the Artillery. Also the Artillery equivalent of a Company is a Battery, but to confuse things further there was a Honourable Artillery Company.

Could do with some more clues to narrow it down though :)

Hi Drew5233, I don't have any papers on L/C Robert Morrow Gillies, I had been on a different page, on here when someone gave me this info. I do know that he served but don't really know in which platoon he served as my Father said to me that he was in his 40's when WW2 happend and that he was on searchlight duty's as he was to old to serve in front lines, I do know that (old Bob (family nikname for him) was born on 6 Jan 1901 at 106 Naburn ST Glasgow (dist Hutchenston) and died9 Sept 1977 at Chalmers ST Edinburgh. He had 3 wives, his first died in child birth and the baby died at 5 weeks old, his second wife (my G Grandmother) died in 1957 of TB, and his 3rd wife lived in Edinburgh. any info from anyone would be great as my grannie, is in a care home and is finding it hard to give any info on her family, I'm also trying to get any info on all the children that Robert and his second wife had due to there being a possibility of still births and/or seath after birth. the help to find these babies would be gratefully received as I want to be able to tell her I found her babie siblings before she passes away

Thanks and Kind Regards

Gillian Stewart-Jamieson

I would go down the service records line. They cost £30 for a copy but you'll know all his units and when he was with them by getting a copy. They will clear up any uncertainty.

Serious help needed!!

Hi I'm wondering if any of you can help me..... I have asked on here before but the help I was given hasn't gotten me anywhere as i don't have full infantry name and I don't have his service no, so cant really get anywhere, if anyone would be so kind to look him up (if they can) My great granddad's name is Robert Morrow Gillies and I know from family stories that he was too old to go to war so was drafted to help at home. He seemingly was part of the army that worked the search lights on the firth forth at the bridges here in Scotland, Some kind gentle man has told me that the regiment was 56th ? light infantry of the royal artillery, but whether that's right I cannot tell. I just cannot seem to find any info on it at all!! please someone help me, I'd love to know more about him, as I never really met him as I wasn't nearly a year old when he passed away so have no recollection of him.

kind regards
Gill

You need not have started a new thread as you are continuing the same topic. :-\

It was suggested on your other thread that you purchase his service record. This would be the most logical thing to do. It does cost £30 and there can be a wait of up to 12 months. You only need to provide his name, date and place of birth if you have no other information and this should be enough for them to find him.

You don't need a service number or infantry name to apply for service records. He may or may not have signed up using his distinctive middle name (unsure if you need to mention this in your application).

All info and application form downloadable from:
