Kent Baptisms
« on: Wednesday 21 January 15 00:04 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I have 2 baptisms (births) and no father is listed for either!

Ann HURREL - female - 19 October 1834 Selling Kent  Mother - Mary Ann HURREL

Ellen Richards - 4 November 1867  Buckland ( Union Workhouse) Dover  Mother - Mary Jane

Would sks be able to shed any light on my search?

Thank you very much from Joan in Canada

I can't see a baptism and from the 1851 census it looks as if she could be illegitimate as she is with her uncle, John Hurrell, presumably Mary Anne's brother.

Although there is this christening - perhaps Martha died and James remarried?

To groom,

Thank you so much for all this information!! I will look for another marriage for James - maybe he was a widower and remarried ( as you suggested)....I did find a reference for Ann Hurrel's birth on a FHL film#1835698 P 64 # 508 so I might have to take a trip to my nearest FHL.

Kind regards from Joan

Hi groom,

Was up late last night checking out your information and did indeed find that James Hurrell was married to Martha Fox.  She died in 1804 as far as I can see and he remarried one Ann Raines or Rogers - both names are listed for same date.  This seems to be the answer to the parents of Mary Ann Hurrell.  I am going to get Ann Hurrell's birth certificate but I suspect that she was "base born".

Thank you again from Joan

I'm afraid that as she was born in 1834 there will be no birth certificate as registration didn't start until 1837 in England.

Hi groom,

I really was up too late last night!  I will have to search parish registers - there is a FHL film to get.
I was also looking at family trees on Ancestry and many have John Hurrell married to Mary Ann MUNN in 1837 but there were several children born before 1837 so he must have been previously married also.  Why genealogists have grey hair!!
Thank you again for your reply....

kind regards from Joan
