James WEIR of Celtic (Scotland) and Middlesboro Football team
« on: Monday 19 January 15 00:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi.
I have a gap in family tree concerning James WEIR and Elsie SMITH, and their family. I believe they emigrated to Australia from the UK. They had a son, who I think was also called James. He may have married a lady called Muriel. In the early 1900's James WEIR senior played football for Celtic,  in Scotland, and later was sold to Middlesboro. After his football career I think he ran the Crown Hotel in Middlesboro. This would have been in the 1940s. I think they lived in Redcar at one time.  The details of the last known contact are very vague. The son and his family lived in the Melbourne area and were visited by a relative, Rena. There is a verbal mention of a Donald and a Margaret WEIR. Children perhaps?
Any details gratefully received.

Billy

Hi Bill
Your request is a bit difficult to follow.

Which parts of the story took place in England and which parts in Australia?

Did James snr and wife come to Australia after the football career?

When and where was James jnr born?/married?

We would like to help if we can ;D

Some football details here, including photo:

There's also a forum entry  from 2011, of a relative tracing family history?
Maybe you could make contact?

Finally, his Middlesbrough playing record:

Thank you Cando, KGarrad and Sparrett.

Your posting summarises pretty well all I know. Much of my knowledge is third hand , oral history in the family. We all know how that can be misdirecting, even second hand!
I do not know whether James (Jimmy) and Elsie left England to live in Australia.
I think it was James and Muriel who emigrated to Australia, and were visited in the Melbourne area by another relative  - distant to me - probably in the 60's. At this stage I am not sure if Jimmy and Elsie had 3 children; James (b. 1914), Margaret (b. 1922) and Donald (b. 1928).
To tell completely all I know, in the very back of my memory is a tale that Jimmy was found dead , collapsed  behind a door, and Elsie died a year later. That fits with the record that a James Weir died at Cleveland in 1959 and an Elsie Weir at Cleveland in 1960. Search of the local papers has not yielded any information, as yet.
