TOOVEY vs TOOVEY

I am currently researching Abraham Toovey, sometimes known as Jack or John.

The facts I know about him to date are :

Born c 1831  Wickham, Hampshire, England

20.2.1875  Charged with breach of peace in Thames NZ
                 Theft charge - dropped
6.4.1875    Toovey was shot at by Thomas H. Edwards in Kauaeranga, Thames
                 he was only injured.   Was working as a bushman.
c 1875       Went to Warkworth and worked as Orchardist/Farmer/Gum digger

I have checked UK Census for 1841 and find that there are two Abraham Tooveys born about the same time, so it is difficult to work out which one is the right one...

Parents:  Abraham and Lydia Toovey
Child:     Abraham Toovey aged 11 years

Abraham Toovey aged 12 years working as a servant for John & Rhode Taylor

How can I track Toovey entering NZ etc.... to try and prove which Abraham Toovey is the correct one?

He never married in NZ so the dates/places for his birth have been gleaned from his childrens birth certificates.

Does anyone have any link to John Toovey who was a NZ Forest Ranger / Armed Constabulary during the Waikato wars ?
A John Toovey was interviewed c 1900 about his time as a NZFR, I would like to also confirm whether this Toovey is related to my family or whether I can rule him out definately.

Any help would be appreciated.

When you say he never married in NZ but he has children do you mean he married in England or you can't find a marriage at all?

You have his wife's maiden name from the children's birth certificates? Have you searched on FreeBMD for the marriage. He would have married after 1837 which was the start of registration so his marriage should be on there.  Then the marriage certificate would name the father and the father's occupation if Abraham wasn't illegitimate. If no father named then you can discount the Abraham son of Abraham and Lydia.
I notice that some public trees have Abraham and Lydia as his parents but I can't see any proof of that.

I see from the NZ BMD's that his 'wife' is Jemima and they had children Laura 1876 and Abraham 1878. The daughter's name Laura may be an indication that Abraham and Lydia in 1841 are his parents because there is a sister Lora (Laura?)

Laura Toovey, born 1876, died in 1891, aged 15 years.

Abraham Toovey, born 1878, died in 1941, aged 63 years.

Obituary for this Abraham Toovey appeared in the 'Rodney & Otamatea Times' & Waitemata & Kaipara Gazette' dated 10.12.1941.........

Abraham Toovey death seems to be registered under Tovey. Found this article about his death in 1880 he was 49 years old

And there are two school records (1909 and 1910) for his namesake son, Abraham TOVEY, Dome Valley School. Father, Mr A. TOVEY.
