'Lyttelton Times' dated 18.9.1868.

"In the Supreme Court of New Zealand etc.,

I, Hugh Milligan, late of Oxford, in the said district, farmer, but now a prisoner for debt in the gaol at Lyttelton," etc. etc.......

Arrived on 'The Mystery', Hugh Milligan, wife and two children, Antrim, labourer.

'Lyttelton Times' dated 8.1.1862.

A family connection?? Just throwing it into the mix.  :)

Thanks for this Lucy

Interesting to see the marriage was in 1851 - the eldest child (Hugh) was born in 1837, and the youngest (Margaret) was born in 1851.

Perhaps this was a second marriage for Hugh?

The Hugh Milligan married Margaret Hood Clarke marriage at Kilmacrenen and the Hugh Milligan married Margaret Hood Clarke at Milford are only 9.4km apart on the map (strange!)

January 24 1851  At Kilmacrenan, on Monday, the 20th inst., by the Rev. Henry C. Cochran, MR H. MILLIGAN, of Killygarvan, to MARGARET HOOD CLARKE, fifth daughter of the late MR JOHN CLARKE, of Ballymacreely, county Down

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/kilmacrenanmn.htm

So the IGI must be wrong? Wrong year, wrong father in law too but right couple? Was it typed up wrong? Was the marriage registered in Lincoln and Kilmacrenan?

*Killygarvan is a parish in Kilmacrenan
Wemyss/Crombie/Laing/Blyth (West Wemyss)
Givens/Normand (Dysart)
Clark/Lister (Dysart)
Wilkinson/Simson (Kettle or Kettlehill)

Perhaps this was a second marriage for Hugh?

Hi Catherine

I did a bit a digging earlier re: the Hugh / Margaret MILLIGAN family (just haven't had time to get back here to post the findings.)  ;)

I'd also firstly entertained the possibility that this might be a second marriage for Hugh, however after viewing the Probate record of Hugh MILLIGAN junior (d. 1877) I found it contains an affidavit from Margaret Hood MILLIGAN (wife of Hugh MILLIGAN the Elder of Oxford, Canterbury), confirming that she was the mother of Hugh junior.
[Hugh MILLIGAN junior, a Contractor living at Cheviot Hills, died at Christchurch Hospital on 28 February 1877, intestate (i.e. without leaving a will.)   His father Hugh,  His mother stated that (his her son) was a bachelor and did not leave "lawful issue".   Hugh (the elder) sought to administer the estate. ]

I'll post a link so you can view the Probate file.

   ~  Lu

Edit:  On re-reading the Probate file, I see that it was actually mother Margaret Hood MILLIGAN who made the statement above ... (have amended accordingly. )   ;D

Thanks Lu - how interesting!  Would love to see the probate file

Does raise a good question now though about the marriage date, a good 14 years after Hugh's birth?

I have seen that it wasn't uncommon at the time for a marriage to take place just before or a little after the birth of a child, but 14 years (and 8 or 9 children) seems odd.

More digging to be done, I think  :)
