Dublin orphanages 1914
« on: Monday 05 January 15 16:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Does anyone know which orphanages would have existed in 1914 around Dun Laoghaire?
I have the three Smyley trust ones but wondered if there were any others?
I'm trying to find out where my great aunts were sent following the death of their mother.
I have recently found one of the great aunt's children. There's a possibility that her mother was fostered. Is there anywhere she can write to, to find out whether this is correct? We have the name of a family she was living with. Trying to find out if they had pottered her.
Thanks

This womans husband died around 1898

And her children were sent here

This convent later closed about 1910 and all the children were sent to various instutions in this case Goldenbridge but having married her lodger she was able to retrieve her children before 1911

Have a look at the list of orphanages in The Ryan Report and The
Residential Institutions Redress Board on the Internet.

Thanks. I wrote to Barnardo, who didn't have any info but kindly forwarded my email to a relevant authority.
They replied with this. It might be useful to others ... I am about to write to them to see where it leads.

You mention that your great-aunts were born in Barnacullia, which we believe is near Glencullen in Co. Dublin, and were in St. Joseph's.

The Daughters of Heart of Mary ran St. Joseph's, Tivoli Road, Dun Laoghaire. This could be the school your great aunts were sent to.

You should write to The Archivist, St. Joseph's, Tivoli Road, Dun Laoghaire. Tel: (01) 2801204.

As  it is possible that your great-aunts were adopted/fostered, or what was known then as boarded out, it is likely that the then Dublin Boarded Assistance was involved in their care.  The records are held by: Tusla Child & Family Agency, Information & Tracing Service, 2nd Floor, Units 4/5 Nexus Building, Banchardstown, Corporate Park, Ballycoolin, Dublin 15. Tel: (01) 8976881.

Everyone has been really helpful.

Thank's for the update nannyj, Barnardo's are very good at least they made an effort on your behalf and hopefully have sent you in the right direction to a successful conclusion.

Hello everybody,

St. Joseph's Orphanage, Tivoli Road, Dunlaoghaire run by The Daughters of The Heart of Mary no longer exists.  They closed it down and moved to Wimbledon, London and the site was redeveloped.  I left a previous post on where to contact them under the subject of St. Joseph's Orphanage, Dunlaoghaire.
