Help with wills probate gov uk site please
« on: Friday 02 January 15 02:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I wish to order  from the gov site but not sure what to do
I've located the person but am a little confused with the order form.

The death is in oct 1941 George Edward Williams (of Mumbles), probate 13th Nov 1941, also a note underneath saying further grant 12 6 (79 ?) - is this 1979?

The order form on the right has a box for folio number, where are the folio numbers located on the record so that I can fill out this box?

The handwritten further grant note under George's record- is this because someone may have contested it? ( I have been told that his children were very angry at the time that their father's estate went to a certain brother in law )  Will this (the further grant) also be included in the info they send me if I purchase the record 13 nov 1941?

Thanks for any help
Kind regards

Hi,

As far as I can tell, the folio numbers only appear in the later years (try a search for SMITH in 1995 and you will see what I mean). But I haven't bothered to find out exactly when it started.

I just put in a request for a few wills from the 1800s and early 1900s and, as there was no folio number, only put in the registry and it accepted the order just fine.

I don't know whether the further probate info will appear in the info you ordered but I suspect not and that you would probably have to apply for both separately. But maybe someone else knows for sure.

hsfam is correct, the folio numbers do appear much late.  I ordered a copy from 1992 and that included a long string of characters which I entered as the folio number.

The further grant date is 12.6.79, as in 1979.  The later entry does mention the former grant, so details may be contained in the probate, they may not, but you would probably have to order the later one to find out who that was granted to as at that point the person who probate was granted to is not contained in the index entry.

Thank you both! :)

Interesting in 79 his assets have risen quite a lot ( inflation I guess).
I am told that his only son talked about fighting the original beneficiary, apparently there was hell of ado about it back then ( witness to the ado at the time was his granddaughter) -  but she doesn't know if  either her father and or his sisters did actually fight it though - it looks like he or they may have done so.

Kind Regards

Folio numbers refer to Grants probated at London between 1858 and 1930. They appear as handwritten numbers next to the calendar entries.

Hi all so helpful   :)
Wouldnt it be better if such good advice was accessible  from the tabs when making an order!
That long string of numbers at the end of the calendar listing,  are you supposed to put it in the folio tab?

also if an entry says resealed in another country does that mean you cant put in an order for the will through the UK site?

Hi Gael

If you are ordering a will pre-1998 the boxes you need to fill in are on the right side of the calendar image.

Please see my previous about folio numbers. The website also has a help button for folio numbers next to the words 'Folio Numbers'

If you are looking for a post 1998 will, you search for and find the relevant entry and add it directly to your basket.

You can order wills that have been resealed elsewhere. The phrasing of the calendar entry tells you that there were assets outside of England & Wales.
