Have had a quick look on the 1861 census and most of the Cavanaghs and Hughes I found seem to have come over from Ireland or be the children of immigrants from Ireland born in Birkenhead. Could only find 2 Patricks though, both of whom were too young to be James' father, and found 2 Thomas Cavanaghs old enough to be Marys' father. (Found a few Patrick Hughes old enough to the father in Liverpool and surrounding areas)

Couldn't find any James and Mary Hughes with daughter Mary Ann on the 1861 census, but found this family on the 1871 census -

RG10/3745 Folio 176 Page 8
Birkenhead, Cheshire
Mary Hughes 47 W(idow) Charwoman Ireland
Mary Ann Hughes 14 Scholar Birkenhead

Can you narrow down info you are looking for?

Catherine

James & Mary Hughes came to the USA sometime after 1859. He died in New York City in 1865. When they came is a mystery. I have no idea of what happened to Patrick Hughes. The same holds true for the Cavanagh family. There does not seem to be an easily distinguishable record of either family in the 1851 census. They may have come to England after 1851 and either left England or died before 1861.
