Margaret Ellen DUKES - Deceased Mauritius 1860's?
« on: Wednesday 31 December 14 17:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi, hoping that some one  might be able to help me with my research and point me  in the right direction as I keep  drawing a blank.

I am led to believe that my 2 x Great-Grand-mother Parent  Margaret Ellen DUKES (nee FRASER), died of Yellow Fever on the Island Mauritius some time between 1866 - 1877, can anyone tell me where I might be able to find the records to establish this - thanks

Steve.

There's a death in India on 16th March 1870: Mrs M E Dukes, age 27, wife of W J Dukes of the E I Railway. Buried same day at Fort William. Might that be her? She died of pneumonia.

EDIT Perhaps not - this is probably a Mary Ellen Benns who as Mary Ellen Holmes, a widowed minor, married William Joseph Dukes in Fort William in 1860.

Hello Shaun,

Thanks for your reply. I thought for a brief moment reading your message, that you had cracked  this mystery for me. Since I initially posted I can add a bit more information, which may help:

According to the Mauritius almanac and civil service register for 1868, William James DUKES Margaret's husband was appointed as Inspector of Works at the Architectural Branch of the Surveyor's General's Department on 04 August 1862.

My 2 x Great Grandfather Harry Barfett DUKES was born in Port Louis in June 1866. He re-appears in the nominal roll of the Royal Hibernian Military School (RHMS) Dublin November 1874. So in terms of the time-frame of Margaret's death we can narrow it to sometime between 1866 and 1874.
