Norfolk Yemoanry/Norfolk Regiment

This photo is believed to be 204410 Pte Frank Victor Futter (shown as Fatter on his MIC and medals) but I am trying to confirm. The cap badge seems to be Norfolk Yeomanry but the few records I have show Frank only in the 9th Batt Norfolk Regiment serving 1917-1918.

I believe that the Yeomanry did become the 12th Batt Norfolk Regiment but is there any link with the 9th Batt? Could Frank have transferred from the Yeomanry to the Norfolk Regiment without it being shown on the MIC? Apart from the MIC none of his records seem to have survived in the National Archives.

Can anyone shed any light?

Hi Eeyore....it's a lovely photo that could do with a bit of TLC...why not post it on the Photo Restoration Board for a repair.

If he was in the NY and then transferred to the infantry then his medals would show the Norfolk regt as it was with them that he earned them.

His Service Records would show both but his medal card would not.

If he is the right man then he must have transferred from the Norfolk Yeomanry to a Norfolk infantry battalion as it has it on the medal card. During WW1 the NY had three battalions. It was only 1st Battalion/ 1st NY that became the 13th Bn in the infantry.

The number 204410 was in a block allocated to the 4th Bn. The block started 200001 so it suggests he was transferred very late.

An Norfolk expert on the Great War Forum may be able to tell you when 204410 was issued. This will be the transfer date.

Ken, interesting what you say about his regimental no. being allocated to the 4th Batt NR. The medal rolls at the National Archive show the 9th Batt. Do you know, therefore, if this suggests he was initially in the 4th Batt but was with the 9th Batt by the time the war ended? I will try the Great War Forum as you suggest.

Could be. After the renumbering of the Territorial battalions in March 1918 men kept the same number if they transferred. The MIC information for the VM and BWM was his rank, number and regiment on 11th November 1918.

The Territorials were renumbered in 1917 - and the numbering was regiment specific.  The purpose of the renumbering was to ensure that men in a single regiment would no longer have the same numbers. Men in different regiments could have the same number.  A man would have changed number if transferred to another regiment or corps.
