My GGrandfather Cornelius Langshaw b1864 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, Married Rose Ann Devine in 1894 Salford, They had 7 children all born in Salford, but never able to find any Baptism records for them until recently when I found 2 Baptisms both on the same day
at St Matthews, Manchester on 29 Nov 1911, Olive born Dec 1905 and John born Aug 1911, But living at 6 Eltoft St, Manchester. I know the family moved into 25 Mulgrave St, Lwr Broughton, Salford, Lancashire between 1901 and 1911 when they appear on the 1911 Census,
and the family lived there untill demolition in the 1970s.
My GGrandfather was a Police Constable in Salford, Could he have been transfered to Manchester because of a special event or Emergency that was taking place in Manchester
if so, what!

Regards

Geoff

Hi, heatherjulie
Thanks for the rapid response, Yes thats my family, my problem is why they are in manchester in 1911 when their home is in Salford, I can only think its linked to Cornelius's work as a Salford Constable but can find no event or  emergency at that time which would involve movement of Police.
Thanks for your heip.
Geoff

Sorry heatherjulie, only just noticed your question in your 2nd reply.
Cornelius joined the army sometime before 1890 and in the 1891 census is based at Frimley,Farnham,Aldershot,Basinstoke,Hampshire as an Acting Bombardier, with the Royal Horse Artillery. He left just before 1900 and joined Salford Police but a short time later was Recalled to Colours and went to South Africa. Not really been able to find much about his Army or Police careers.

Hello,
The addresses are all quite close to each other, I think.
What addresses are given on Olive and John's birth certificates?
There doesn't seem to be a connection to the family living in Eltoft Street in 1911 census. :-\

HI heywood,
Cornelius's family moved from Bolton to Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, where he was born around 1862 and apart from 2 brothers who stayed all the family moved to Manchester and are on the 1881 census,
so Cornelius has relatives in Manchester but that does not explain why the address on the Baptisms is Eltoft St, when his home was Mulgrave St Salford, and ALL his children were born there, That is why I think it must have something to do with his work as a Police Constable and was transfered. I looked at the Eltoft St 1911 census and no connection with the family living there apart from one son born in Salford but that was in the Regent Rd area
Thak you
Geoff

They might just have preferred St Matthews Church, or maybe it was nearer to their house in Salford, than a church in Salford.  Manchester and Salford are right next to each other, both cities, but Salford now comes under Greater Manchester.
