Robert Jack Calder - South Africa
« on: Tuesday 09 December 14 08:00 GMT (UK) »
I have a relative who emigrated to Durban in 1911. As I will be visiting South Africa next year, I am interested in finding more information, such as BMD and census records. Does anyone know where I can find these records, either on-line or in South Africa?

If you give the name of your relative and whatever details you have possibly we can trace the information you are looking for.  This will make it a lot easier when you get here.

His name was Robert Jack Calder, born 1888, died 1945. He married but we have no knowledge of his wife's name or when or where they married. We do know that he did have at least one daughter called Edith. He lived in Durban most of his life, after leaving Scotland in about 1911.

Looks like you will have to go to Pietermaritzburg while you are here as I have found the following two estate files.  I also found a copy of the marriage on familysearch.org.  If you search under Africa and type in his name it pops up and you can download the scan.  Once you have copies of the estate files from the archives it should give you more information on Edith and possible other children that they had.

Hope this all helps  :D   Do enjoy your visit to South Africa!
