Farmers Henry McShane & Johnn Toner
« on: Saturday 06 December 14 18:44 GMT (UK) »
Both my GGG Grandfathers were farmers. I'm not sure if it would be in the Paisley/Renfrew district or Glasgow. Henry was married to Mary Coyle and John was married to Jane Sanderson. Would love to know where they were farmers. Does anyone recognise the names or have anything to add ?
Thank you
Mary  ;)

You haven't given any idea of dates. Marriage certificates should give residence at time of marriage, census records and birth certificates of children, etc. may also confirm occupation & location.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you, i'm not too great at this kind of thing. I'll add what i know so far .. Henry McShane was born in 1820 and John Toner was born in 1825. I don't have any marriage certificates as yet. I have several in my search but these two are next on my list so hopefully i'll get more info from there.

If you don't have any certificates yet how did you come up with the occupations. Census records might be the next step you need to try.

Added- see that some details have already been found for you-

Henry McShane-
1861- iron furnaceman
1871- brickwork labourer
1881- agricultural labourer
1891- poorhouse?
Think 'farmer' is exaggerating a bit

From what has already been posted before on several threads looks like Henry McShane & Mary Coyle would have married in Ireland. See reply #3 for Henry's occupations in census records (not 'farmer' in any)- the census records posted on previous Scotland thread will show locations where the family lived.

To find details about John Toner you'll need to check back step by step through census records in Scotland if that's where he lived.

Scotland's People is only resource for 1911 Scottish census but you can find transcriptions of earlier ones on Ancestry which is a pay site. If you don't have a subscription then check with your local library as many have access to it.

As your profile says you are in Glasgow then there will be other local resources such as the Mitchell Library where you can find more detail.

Just noticed your last comment about Farmer is exaggerating a bit !! I only wrote farmer because that is exactly what is on his sons marriage certificate. I don't care what my ancestors where, poor house or otherwise, i just write what it says on certificate.
Thank you for your time :)
