Ellen TOOMEY/TWOMEY-Philadelphia
« on: Thursday 04 December 14 10:57 GMT (UK) »
I'm attempting to locate the birth/baptism record for a Ellen or Helen or Margaret Helen or Ellen Margaret Toomey/Twomey born ca. 1810-1820 in Philadelphia. Her father may have been called Allen. The family may have originated in Ireland so most likely Catholic. Ellen left Philadelphia and arrived in Hobart Town, Australia in 1836.
Any information regarding her US birth would be appreciated.
Thanks
Lisa

Hi, we are descedants of Ellen Margaret  Toomey who was married to John Grimes, a convict in tasmania.
Ellen was born in Phillidelphia, England.(not america)
Phillidelphia is in a county now called Tyne and Wear.
Originally called Newcastle on Tyne. Near the border of scotland.
Ellen came to Hobart( tasmania) on a boat named Boadecia in about 1832.
Mainly young women were on board to serve as housemaids and brides for convicts.
John grimes had formally been married to Mary Little, a female convict.
She died and left him with a child named Harriett.
Ellen married john mainly to care for Harriett.
Hopefully this helps.

Hi
thanks for the information
I thought the USA was incorrect. it appears on the birth certificate of her son Edward as USA but just as the place-name on her death certificate.
What is the source of your information? Did you locate a baptismal record for her?
I haven't been able to locate a marriage record for Ellen and John in Tasmania. Have you had any luck with that?
I'm descended from their eldest daughter, Elizabeth. Which child are you descended from?
Best wishes
Lisa

I have now obtained passenger and migration records for the Boadicea from the Tasmanian Archives.

Ellen is recorded on the official documents as being Irish.

It appears from these records that the references to her birthplace being Philadelphia on her son's birth record and her death record are apocryphal and in the absence of any other confirmation that the determination that this would be Philadelphia in England is just speculation.

I wouldn't rule out Ellen as being born in Philadelphia (England) just because shipping record says she was Irish. It might simply be that her family came from Ireland. Who was the informant for her death certificate? and for her son's birth certificate (the 2 records that mention 'Philadelphia').
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks, aghadowey.

On the son's 1857 birth record Ellen is the informant although her given name is recorded as Margaret and her birthplace is recorded as Philadelphia, USA.

On her 1872 death record the informant is her husband John Grimes and the birthplace is recorded as just Philadelphia.

The only suggestion I have seen that the birthplace is Philadelphia (which I think would have been in County Durham at the time) in England comes from Rizdoe Harajukihama who has not provided any supporting evidence.
