Christian JUFFS - Eynsham
« on: Sunday 30 November 14 16:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi:
I have a Christian JUFFS, (not sure about the spelling- JEFFS/JIFFS/JUFFE) married Thomas LAY 7th September 1774, in Eynsham.

I am trying to find her baptismal record and her parents names.  I am assuming she was born, in the 1740-1755 time period, possibly in Eynsham.  Her first child Hannah was born in Combe in 1775.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

JJJ2

Hi
You may know this but do not say so it may be of use.
In the transcribed PR's for Eynsham there are no JUFFS (spelling variants looked at as well) in baptism, burials and marriages.
So she most likely arrived and then departed as the only one.
I will have a look at Coombe - perhaps she had her first baby at her Mum's - quite usual.

Hope this helps in some small way

MMM interesting - nothing in Coombe either.

Do you know what, I reckon I would ask under perhaps a new post on here for some kind soul who is going to St Lukes, Oxford to look at the actual PR for the marriage to check the transcription of her whole name.

To me JUFFS is unusual but so too is her first name.

A close examination of the original PR may be the quickest way to be certain about her last and indeed her first name and then resume the quest for who she was -- just an idea for you to consider?

Hi JJJ2 :) and NDRFT ;)

Here's a funny thing - the OFHS Marriage Index and Phillimore's both have this marriage exactly as quoted.

They also both have a Catherine/Catharine JUFFS marrying Thomas DIPPER in Eynsham on 20 August 1786 - further evidence of this family in the parish :-\

(Btw, there are 14 Christian/Christiana brides among the 'J' surnames in the Index, so it's not unique.)

Going now before I cause any more confusion ;D

Hi Carol
Yes I saw that in the OFHS Marr Index and indeed the marriage is in the transcribed PR's CD for Eynsham' s St Leonard Church which I have on the other screen now.

I can also see the other marriage to of a Catherine Thomas Dipper in 1786. So if that is the same person then ONE of the 2 first names is most likely wrong but also why in the 2nd marriage if it is the same woman did she use her 'maiden' name again? So many questions

There are no baptisms for that last name nor burials in the PR's so it does not look like she originated from Eynsham.

I agree her first name is not unique.

So all in all I just think it may be worth a request for a look at the original PR's for confirmation and to avoid causing more confusion?

Nigel

JJJ2

The other place to go and ask for a look up is of course the Oxfordshire Family History Society. They offer a search service for a very small and reasonable fee. They also have a partially (i believe) completed baptism index for the county and from within that there may well be a clue about who Christian / Catherine was and where she came from?

Nigel, I wasn't suggesting that Christian and Catherine were the same person, just that they might be related :D

You're right, this does need someone to look at the original record rather than a transcript.
