Family Tree programs
« on: Sunday 23 November 14 13:57 GMT (UK) »
Hiya
When i started doing trees in 2000 i used a package called Family tree maker. This worked very well for me ans was compatible with my laptop.

I have upgraded my laptop to windows 8 and it is now longer compatible and wondered if someone was a bit more techie and could advise me how I would change without losing all my data.

thanks in advance

You can export your data as a GEDCOM file from your old FTW program and import it into a new family tree program of your choice.

Go the Help section of your FTW program to get more info on how to create and export a GEDCOM file.

Hi Sam

If your "old" tree contains any media files then you may be unable to upgrade directly.

You may need to upgrade in more than one hop if media files are involved.

Start with a few (more) questions . . . . .
1) Is the old computer system still with you? Still working?

2) Make / model of computer system? Windows? What version?

3) The tree data is still on the computer systemit? More than one tree?

4) Exact name of tree program? Version number?
(Start it up, go to "Help", the name/version may very well be there.)

Regards

As long as the program was Family Tree maker and not simply Family Tree (a 1997 program with no gedcom facility) you should be able to import your files into a more modern version of the same program. Both the 2012 and the 2014 versions of this are designed to run on Windows 8.
