Old Row, and Cliff Terrace
« on: Monday 17 November 14 20:24 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for indications as to where two streets were in Sunderland:

1) Old Row: this is recorded on the 1851 census as being in All Saints Ecclesiastical District, Monkwearmouth

2) Cliff Terrace: this is recorded on the 1881 census as being in St Barnabas Ecclesiastical District, Bishopwearmouth

AIGR (All information gratefully received)

John

You can see Cliffe Terrace on this map http://maps.nls.uk/view/102341482#zoom=5&lat=1506&lon=8602&layers=BT (to the west of the oil tanks) There is not a listing for Old Row, can you give the  reference, or details, for the census entry.

In the 1851 Census Old Row comes after Sinkers Row and Old Office Row, and before New Square, which you can see on this map http://maps.nls.uk/view/102341485#zoom=6&lat=3209&lon=5982&layers=BT
The description of the census district includes "Monkwearmouth Colliery, the Groups and Rows of Houses occupied by the miners and others."

It might have been another name for South Row.
