Glamorgan Archives - anyone here used them?
« on: Monday 17 November 14 17:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi.
I've got a birth & marriage certificate for my grandfather who was born in Ty Pontypridd workhouse.  It seems his mother was also a resident there & I also want to find out about her.
His DOB was 1908 so I should be able to get up to 5 or maybe 6 years' worth of records before the 100 year privacy law kicks in.
My question is, how much research should I request having to pay for it at £30 p/h?
Have you been happy with the amount of findings in 1 or 2 hours, or do they realistically need more time?
Any general info about the process would be useful.
Many thanks.

So I stumped up for 2 hours research.
Here is what I put on the request form:

-   Edward Jones b.28/12/08
Any details from Ty Pontypridd workhouse & anything else you can find
-   Mary Ann Jones (Edward’s mother) inmate at Ty Pontyrpidd workhouse January 1909.  Gave birth to Edward at the workhouse.  Formerly of 32 Gwyn Ivor Street, Mountain Ash.
Any other details are required, such as D.O.B, census returns, previous marriage, date of death, records from Ty Pontypridd.

I could not find any census details for Mary Ann Jones prior to being an inmate at Ty Pontypridd.
Edward had 2 older brothers; David & Thomas and also had an older sister; Mags (Margaret or Maggie).

I already have copies of Edward’s birth & marriage certificates & death registry entry for 1975.

I thought I'm only going to find out once & I'd be a bit miffed if there was more info they could have found if they'd only had a little more time.
Will let you know what £60 of research can get you....

Well I got along pretty well!
8 scans of admissions & discharge registry entries for Mary Ann Jones & her 2 sons Edward & David & daughter Margaret.  I also got a 2 page summary of what was found.  It also revealed their date of births, so I registered on ancestry.co.uk & have since found where Mary Ann grew up in Gelligaer & also her parents.
Well worth £60 to me. :)

Hi.
From what I can make out from 1871, 1881 & 1901 census returns Mary Ann Jones was born & raised in Gelligaer village.
Her parents were Matthew & Margaret.
