Yes, Northop parish records seem to be more detailed than some, which brings me to my next conundrum.  I have found a burial record for what I am thinking may be Moses' father, Joannis, which you rightly say is Latin for John.  This record from Hawarden, shows a Johannes Maddocks, buried 22nd April 1718.  My query is what the last word is on the line (see attached snip).  I'm at a loss.

To me the word looks to read peregrin(y)?

Latin Peregrinus, is a name originally meaning "one from abroad", ie, a foreigner, traveller, or pilgrim

Thankyou Ladyhawk, I think you may be right.  I thought it might be a village in Hawarden Parish but, couldn't find a match.  Your suggestion is a word I have not come across before, so I thank you so much for that and, John Maddocks would be deemed to be a 'foreigner', being from outside the Hawarden Parish, coming from Soughton in the parish of Northop.  another piece of the puzzle falls in to place.
