Moses Maddocks
« on: Saturday 15 November 14 22:43 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction.  I have a Moses Maddocks who was buried 12th July 1742.  According to FindMyPast, he was buried in Nannerch, Flintshire but, Clwyd FHS has him buried in Hawarden.  Wherever he was buried, he was from Breton, Flintshire.

I have come up against the proverbial 'brick wall' as to where - or when - he was born.

Hi, thankyou for your reply.  I have been though that wonderfully helpful index previously.  The earliest record I can find of Moses is of his marriage to Alicia Machilt in 1722.  Then there are the baptisms of 7 children and finally Moses' burial in 1742 but, there doesn't seem any mention of him before his marriage.  Maybe there were records available for the Flintshire or neighbouring areas that are not covered by Clwyd FHS or FindMyPast?

You probably already know this, but Alicia Machill looks like the widow of George Machill(married 1718,died1722).She is given here,in effect,as nee Sivedale, though her original marriage record has quite a significant spelling variant

Hawarden Deeds/ 1477.

Title
Grant from John Peters of Bretton, co. Flint, yeoman, and Alice his wife, widow of Moses Maddocks of Bretton, yeoman ..., 1766, Nov. 12

Summary
Grant from John Peters of Bretton, co. Flint, yeoman, and Alice his wife, widow of Moses Maddocks of Bretton, yeoman, and sister and heiress of John Sivedale of Moore, co. Flint, yeoman, deceased, to Moses Maddocks of Bretton, yeoman, eldest son of the said Alice by her deceased husband, Moses Maddocks, of a cottage and a parcel of land called Crowfoot Head Land in Moore aforesaid. Witnesses: John Haddock; Richard Williamson.

Regards
Roger

Roger, this is news indeed to me!  I had not known Alice was previously married or indeed, that she married again after Moses had died.  Is there a way I can get hold of a copy of the deed?

Regards

I'm not sure, you may have to contact The National Library of Wales. As a slight aside,if you go to the NLW site full catalogue and use the search term "Moses Maddocks"(including quotation marks) you will get a few more references. They may not tell you anything new,but you never know.

Roger

Reasonable candidates for Alice's parents, given the same spelling variant,Sybdell, might be John and Elizabeth buried 1713/1714.In the Nannerch register he is given as of "Moor" as per the NLW deed.

There also appears to be quite a few entries for the variant Sybdale in Nannerch and Hawarden.
