Richard Ping....16th foot Beds Herts Regiment
« on: Saturday 15 November 14 20:13 GMT (UK) »
Hello...please can someone help us with a family conundrum?
My wife's Grandfather was we assume in this regiment...round about 1882  then again after 1891. BUT this is all due to family supposition.
He has disappeared from the 1881 census, this may be due to the fact that he tried to join the Guards but after 8 days was "let go" due to B2?
We have hardly any information of where the Beds & Herts were during the above time frames.
Many Thanks.

The other record you mention was February 1881when he was let go

We have hardly any information of where the Beds & Herts were during the above time frames.

There is a wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedfordshire_and_Hertfordshire_Regiment which states that (from 1881):

"On formation, the 1st Battalion the Bedfordshire Regiment was stationed at Newry in Ireland, while the 2nd was in India. The 1st Battalion remained on home service in England and Malta until 1889, when it sailed for India. In 1895 it formed part of the force that took part in the Relief of Chitral. The battalion left India in 1907, arriving in England via Aden in the following year. In 1913 they were posted to Mullingar in Ireland.

The 2nd Battalion served in India and Burma until 1891 when it returned to England, moving to Dublin in 1898. From there it moved to South Africa in 1900, taking part in the Second Boer War. In 1903 it returned to England and moved to Gibraltar in 1907, Bermuda in 1910 and to South Africa in 1912."

It is worth double-checking for accuracy, but this gives a starting point.

All the best
Philip
