Hi
I'm looking for information about Edith Riggs who arrived in Wellington in 1912 aboard the SS Turakina. She was born in Ireland in 1882. Any help appreciated

Thanks

Hi Ferg,

It would help to know a bit more about your Edith.

Would she have been single, married, widowed?
Parents and siblings? Any relatives in NZ or Australia at that time?
Do you know if she had a middle name?

Here you say (and it seems well confirmed) that your Edith was Edith Mary Riggs b. 1884
How certain are you that the 1912 shipping list is the right person?

Hmm, on the Turakina in 1912 on the arrival lists is an Ethel May Riggs:

Simply "E Riggs" on the outgoing lists.  Don't see Edith at all (there is a younger Edith Riggs b. circa 1889 arrived 1909 but she English and travelling with family).

This lady arrived on the Turakina I think married in 1917 and was from Dublin (according to report on her marriage at http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz )

Many thanks for your reply

I'm not sure that the E Riggs is the same, but there was no other E Riggs born in Ireland around 1880-1885.
She doesn't appear in the 1911 census and there are no marriage or death records for her in Ireland.
I am just checking the NZ link as the dates and country of birth match :)
Riggs was not a very common name in Ireland

There's definitely others.  Here's "Ethel May Riggs" aged 20 in 1911 - the woman I believe was on the Turakina in 1912 (the incoming passenger list does specify her as Ethel not Edith).

I see from the other thread that it appears her father died when she was quite young and her mother remarried - have you checked to see if she pops up under her stepfather's surname?
