India: KILLEEN (related surnames QUINN and LARSEN)
« on: Tuesday 11 November 14 11:32 GMT (UK) »
My great-grandfather had two first cousins born in India.  I’ve become fascinated with this branch of the family and through a combination of familysearch.org, FindMyPast, Ancestry, FIBIS, the India Office Family History Search and some excellent assistance from the Scotland and New Zealand forums here I’ve traced quite a lot of the family history including the life of the elder cousin, Roland Martin Quinn who died in New Zealand in 1918 with no descendants.

Roland’s younger sister, Edith Mary Quinn was born in 21 July 1874 in Fyzabad.  She was married to Austin Killeen (born about 1861) on 21 October 1891 in St Michael’s Chapel, Simla.  Edith and Austin had four children:

James Austin Killeen, born 4 July 1892 in Chungla Gully
Kathleen Mary Killeen, born 10 September 1893 in Landour
Aileen Margaret Killeen, born 28 July 1896 in Siakot
Doreen May Killeen, born 27 May 1907 in Peshawar

Shortly after Doreen’s birth, Austin died on 6 September 1907 in Murree.

Edith married John Harry Cathcart Larsen (born 14 October 1876 in Cawnpore) on 24 October 1908 in Karachi.  Edith and John had one daughter, Winifred Edith Georgina Larsen born 5 July 1911 in Multan.

Edith died on 14 March 1929 in Karachi.  John died on 21 December 1930 in Karachi.

There is a marriage in India of Georgiana W Larsen to Frederick George Lewis in 1930 and I believe this is actually Winifred Edith Georgina Larsen.  I have found Frederick and Winifred Larsen travelling between the UK and India/Pakistan on several occasions over the years.  There appear to be no children.  Winifred Edith G Lewis dies in Hertfordshire in 2003.

I have not found what happens to Edith’s other children.  There is a James Killeen born in India who dies in France in 1915, but I have been advised that James Killeen is a different man born in Futtehgurh in 1873.  There is also a James A Killeen born about 1893 who dies in Hemel Hempstead in 1964, although I have nothing to connect this man to James Austin Killeen other than the death of half-sister Winifred in Hertfordshire many years later.  I have no leads at all for Kathleen, Aileen or Doreen.

I don’t know what other resources there might be other than those I have mentioned above, but if anyone was able to find any more information about the Killeen siblings it would be greatly appreciated.

Just updating my own research in case another family member comes across this, although this appears to be increasingly unlikely.  Perhaps descendants from another Quinn line.

I haven't found a shipping record for him yet, but in 1941 in Brentford, Middlesex James Killeen marries Constance May Bentley (born 1903 in Lambeth).  Between 1949 and 1958 James and Constance can be found at the same address in Acton.  Over the years they share the house with a rotating cast of names, possibly boarders.  In 1958 Constance dies in hospital in Acton.

I haven't found any evidence of James and Constance having children.

In 1960 James is sharing the address in Acton with Winifred E G Lewis, Frederick G Lewis and ... Doreen M Lovery.  Back tracking to 1959, Winifred, Frederick and Doreen can be found at an address in Wembley.  In 1962 and 1963, James, Winifred and Frederick share the Acton address with another couple who have lived at various addresses in the area but Doreen has moved on.

A 1960 shipping record shows Doreen Tate-Lovery from the Acton address travelling to Perth, Western Australia.  Electoral rolls from the late 1940s and 1950s show Doreen Mae Tate-Lovery living in Canning Vale, WA with Thomas Patrick Tate-Lovery.  Shipping records show the couple travelling to and from Perth together and individually. The State Library of WA has portrait photographs of Thomas and Doreen from 1952.

Thomas Patrick Tate Lovery (no hyphen) is born in Mysore in 1889.  In 1940 he marries for the second time in Madras to Doreen Mae Lewis.  Based on the London living arrangements I'm confident this is actually Doreen May Killeen.  A related thread here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=712505.0

A 1952 WA newspaper item informs that T P Lovery has sold his property.  In the 1960s Doreen is living in WA without Thomas, and in 1969 Thomas Patrick Tate-Lovery dies in Hindmarsh, South Australia.

I haven't found any evidence Thomas and Doreen had children or a death for Doreen.  There appears to be just one other Tate-Lovery family in Australia that move to Perth in the 1960s and who descend from Thomas' brother.  It is not yet clear why Doreen would have married using the name Lewis.

Winfred’s will identifies a niece Patricia Shaw and her husband Anthony Shaw at an address in Hemel Hempstead.  A commercial site with relatively recent electoral roll data shows Anthony of that address had the middle initial J.  Anthony Joseph Shaw and Kathleen Patricia Kelly marry in Calcutta in 1946, showing the age of both as 30.  On several shipping records between India and England, (Kathleen) Patricia shows a birth date of 1918.  Kathleen Patricia Shaw dies in Hertfordshire in 1998 with the death index revealing a birth date of 1913.  Anthony Joseph Shaw dies in Hertfordshire in 2003.  Shipping records also include a daughter Patricia Ann Shaw born in 1948 probably in India.   Patricia Ann Shaw dies in Hertfordshire in 1964 aged 15.  This partially answers the question of whether this family line survived to my generation as Patricia Ann would have been my 4th cousin.

Patricia Ann, Kathleen Patricia, Anthony and Winifred (indexed on deceasedonline as “George aka Winifred Edith”) are all buried in Woodwells Cemetery.  Winifred is buried alone, but Patricia Ann, Kathleen Patricia and Anthony are each shown as sharing their grave with one other, suggesting there is one more burial to discover next time I have credits on deceasedonline.  Having a half-sister, niece and grand-niece that die in Hertfordshire supports the suggestion that the James A Killeen that dies in Hemel Hempstead in 1964 is James Austin Killeen.

Kathleen Patricia Kelly’s birth date of 1913 along with her forename suggests her mother might be Kathleen Mary Killeen born 1893 although Aileen Margaret Killeen born 1896 is not entirely out of the question.  I have not found a marriage of a man named Kelly to either Kathleen or Aileen Killeen.  I have no other leads on the fate of Kathleen or Aileen Killeen.

Of course, most of this has taken me out of "Other Countries", however I still have no other leads on the fate of Kathleen or Aileen Killeen.

Edit: Date of property sale.

Of course, almost as soon as I post, other information comes to light.

In 1968 finds Winifred Lewis in Perth WA sharing an address with Doreen Lovery.

In 1952 a newspaper item announces the engagement of a man named Lewis who is described as the only son of Mrs T Lovery.  A corresponding wedding announcement in 1953 confirms Mr Lewis as the son of Mr and Mrs Lovery.  A reverse look-up of WA marriages reveals a full name for the groom and a corresponding birth can be found in India in 1929.  This would seem to be the child of a first marriage for Doreen.  The couple can still be found on the electoral roll for Perth in 1968.

Obviously no names as the couple may still be alive, but this nephew is not mentioned on Winifred's will as her niece is.

Just bringing this line of investigation up to date:

1. There is a pension record for the quarter ending 31 March 1908 indicating that Kathleen and Aileen (recorded as Eileen) Killeen were eligible for a pension on the death of their father Austin, but the pension was held in abeyance as the children had been admitted to St Michael's Orphanage, Murree.  Kathleen would have been 14 and Aileen was 11 at the time of the record.

James is not mentioned but was 15 at the time, so possibly not eligible for a pension?

2. In 1928, Doreen May Larsen (transcribed in the FindMyPast index as Larren) marries Edward Albert Lewis in Karrachi.  Father of the bride is shown as John Harry Larsen, so this is Doreen Killeen using her step-father's surname.  The groom's father is Percy Charles Frederick Lewis, so the groom (born Albert Edward Charles Lewis) is the brother of Frederick George Lewis.  Frederick Lewis and Georgiana (Winifred) Larsen are the witnesses.  This explains why Doreen uses Lewis at her second marriage.

3. In 1929, Geoffry Peter Charles Lewis is born in Keamari.  Geoffrey Peter Charles Lewis dies in Perth, Western Australia in 1985 and a name on one of the death notices supports this being the Peter Lewis only son of Mrs T Lovery who marries in Perth in 1953.  He is described in another as the son of the late Edward and Doreen.

4.  Geoffrey Peter Charles Lewis and his first wife show on the electoral role together until 1963 after which the wife appears on her own in 1968 and 1972. This first wife publishes a touching death notice for Peter.  Death notices for G P C (Peter) Lewis show that he had a second wife and 3 children - these children would be my 4th cousins.

5. There is an error in the index on deceasedonline - the actual burial record shows that Kathleen Patricia Shaw shares a grave with Anthony and Patricia Ann.   Kathleen Patricia is incorrectly indexed as sharing a grave with an apparently unrelated person buried the day before.

Information I would be interested to discover:

1. A date of death for Doreen Killeen / Larsen / Lewis / Tate-Lovery aka Lovery

2. The fate of Kathleen Killeen and Aileen Killeen after entering the orphanage in 1908 including confirmation of a marriage of one (probably Kathleen) to Mr Kelly around 1912.

Hi Vanessa

It's nice to hear from you.  You and I are 4th cousins through our common Great-great-great-grandparents John & Mary Quinn.

I have now worked out your grandmother died as Doreen May Counsel in 1976.  I don't have the details of that marriage which would have occurred between 1968 and 1972.

The missing piece of the puzzle is the fate of your father's two aunts Kathleen and Aileen Killeen.

I'd love to make contact and share information.  Rootschat requires you to make 3 posts before we can contact each other through Personal Meesages.  Hope to hear from you again soon.

EDIT: I see you have also contacted me through "Cousin Connect".  I'll email you through that address!
