Er Lee Royal Field Artillery "X" 31st Trench Mortar Bty
« on: Sunday 09 November 14 16:25 GMT (UK) »
My husbands Great Uncle Er Lee from Ashton Under Lyne , Lancshire was killed on 31st October 1918. His mother received the telegram on Armistice day .  As by that time she was widowed, had lost a son as a young child and just had one older married son, she was alone.

We have found he is buried in Vichte Cemetery, Belgium (CWG records) . We are planning to visit the grave.

Where can we find out more about what happenend to him?. The records say he was in  Royal Field Artillery    "X" 31st Trench Mortar Bty and was a Gunner.

Thank you

CWGC has him correctly as a Gunner - the RA equivalent of a Private. They also give his date of death as 31st October with the name E Lee.

X 21st Trench Mortar Battery was a unit in the 21st Division - http://www.1914-1918.net/21div.htm - gives the make up of the Division plus the battles they took part in. It also says - There is no memorial to the 21st Division or a published history.

The divisional war diary is not available for download - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/war-diaries-ww1.htm - you could try again in a few months. You could also ask on the Great War Forum or firepower.org if battery war diaries are available.
