Thanks a lot Nicky.  This is really useful .

I've only got back as far as the 1861 census. I've never seen a return for the '41 census. Does it give the elder John Newman's relationship to the younger?

Do you have any access to the 1851 census so that I can have info on the rest of the family?

Apart from lookups I was hoping to connect to anyone else who may be researching the same tree.

Thanks again

Hi

On the 1841 information is pretty basic, there is no relationship given and ages in general ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 for anyone over the age of 15. So anyone listed as 15, could in fact be anything between 15 and 19.

Here is the 1851 census

address Knighton
parish of Canford Magna

John Newman, age 46, farm labourer born Great Canford
Hannah Newman, wife, age 48 born Great Canford
Charles Newman, son, age 9, errand boy born Great Canford
William Newman, son, age 7, scholar born Great Canford
Henry Newman, son, age 6, scholar born Great Canford
James Newman, son, age 4, at home born Great Canford
Cornelius Newman, son, age 2, at home, born Great Canford

Hope this will help.

Nicky

Here are some burials from the Dorset OPC site for Canford Magna.

May 20 1835 Charles Budden Newman - an infant

September 13 1835 Eliza Newman age 26

April 1 1836 George Newman age 1 year 2 months

These may tie in with your research.

Hi Linna,

I see you got some good response.  I have had none!

My Fry's came from Iwerne Courtney aka Shroton. Moved to Corfe in 1848 and then to Wimborne. Probably not connected.
