I found some references in the papers to Edward Wallis as game keeper to Lord  Warwick's estate. I also found an item  in Wells Journal of  21 Apr 1866 which mentions two men charged with breaking into the premises of John Wallace , gamekeeper to Lord Warwick in Somerset. It seems that the Warwick estates extended to Somerset and may explain the way the family moved around.
There are also references to John Wallace as bailiff to the Earl of Warwick which fits in with later census records.

Thanks to everyone with their help. John Wallis or Wallace did move to Clutton, Somerset and worked for thr Earl of Warwick. The family split up before 1871 and both John and his wife Elizabeth called themselves Widow's when they were still married? Most of the chihdren, became servents in other households.

May I ask for help with finding Clara, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Wallace (Wallis)?

Clara Wallace was born at Greyfield, Clutton in 1853. She was christened on 2nd November 1855 at ? Church, Clutton. In 1871 census Clara (Wallice) was listed as living in Holt, Bradford upon Avon, Wiltshire. An employee and living with Eyres family. I believe this to be Clara.

Clara then goes off the radar. No other Clara Wallaces in Censes after 1871, electoral rolls or other deaths of a Clara Wallace of similar age that I think fit. I cannot match her to a marriage and she isn’t listed as dying as Clara Wallace.  Most of her family, her mother, three sisters and brother are living in London from 1871 onwards and I would have thought she would have tried to be closer to them.

I have found a Clara Wallace, aged 28, who died in an asylum in West Yorkshire in 1882. Not sure this is her.

Would anyone be able to help with this?

I have an extended family of Wallises in and around Chipping Campden and Broadway, descended from the 7 sons of *Benjamin Wallis, b.c1675 in Stanway.  I'm really only familiar with my own particular branch, which does not fit here, so cannot point to any definite link. Several villages worth looking at: Weston Subedge, Ashton Subedge , Church Honeybourne, Childwickham, Saintbury, Broadway, Willersey, Chipping Campden, Evesham, further south towards Stow on the Wold and west towards Cheltenham.

Please get back to me if you think I may be able to help.

Geoff

Thanks.

I've found another Clara Wallace admitted to Wiltshire County Lunatic Asylum in 1874 and released in 1876. The records are held at Chippenham and will go and have a look to see if this is my Clara.

There is no connection with your Wallis/Wallaces as none lived in or around Gloucestershire.

Thanks for the offer

Regards
Rosie

Hi, Rosie!

Glad you now have a definite lead to follow up.  I have used the Chippenham RO in the past; they have a very good documents service and are extremely helpful.
