lindop's in norton in the moors 1750 - 1810
« on: Saturday 01 November 14 18:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, looking for information on any Lindop family from the Norton in the Moors area from 1750 to 1810. OR can anyone suggest a line of investigation say into tenant farmers at that time. Also does anyone have any information on the area of Norton known as "New Inn Bank" as it has cropped up on some christening information around 1790 - 1805.

Hi Victor, you might find some information about tenant farmers in manorial records.  You would need to know which manor the land belonged to (not always the obvious one unfortunately!).   The Staffordshire Archives web site has a list of manorial records that they hold (a PDF download).  The Manorial documents Register lists records held more widely.

For example,
Manor of Norton court books 1647/8-1809, 1810-1931 are at SRO ref. D1798/71; 597/1-10

The records of the Manor of Newcastle under Lyme were a gold mine of info on my Tittensor ancestors.

Regards.

Paul

Findmypast have the registers for Norton le Moors.  In the period 1780-1800 (the only period I have looked at)

28 April 1782 - Richard Lindop and Hannah Sarjant married by Banns.  Both signed.  Witnesses:  Thomas Booth and William Steel.
23 March 1783 - Thomas, son of Richard and Hannah of New Inn Bank, baptised
10 February 1788 - William, son of Richard and Hannah of New Inn Bank, baptised
17 January 1790 - John, son of Richard and Hannah of New Inn, baptised
1 October 1797 - John, son of Richard and Hannah of New Inn, buried
14 July 1799 - Enoch, son of Richard and Hannah of New Inn Bank, baptised

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
