Sheffield pubs and Henry Humberstone
« on: Thursday 30 October 14 22:23 GMT (UK) »
Can anybody please tell me what was the name of the pub at 27 & 29 Waingate in the Sheffield census of 1881.  Also the name of the pub at 43 Charles Street in 1901.  My cousin's husband, Henry Humberstone, worked at the Waingate pub before taking over the Plough on Broad Street and then the Three Horse Shoes on Norfolk Street.  His widow, Sarah Elizabeth Humberstone, subsequently took over the Sportsman on Cambridge Street.  She later emigrated to New York.  Also, I feel there must be an obituary for him in a local newspaper but have not been able to find one.  He died in November 1906.  Can anybody help please?

To save anybody else looking - no pub name is shown on either the 1881 or 1901 image

Sheffield Archives appear to hold lots of information on Beer keepers

https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/libraries/archives-and-local-studies/collections/sheffield-magistrates-court-records.html

At the bottom of page there is a searchable data base of the pubs, unfortunately doesn't give street numbers.

Many thanks for your help.  I can't find any of his pubs on the list which presumably means the list is not complete as he is listed as 'licensed victualler' in the 1891 and 1901 censuses, and his widow in the 1911 census.

According to the 1890 Town plan there were four public houses on Waingate, http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=435719,387690

Thanks Stan, from the 1881 census that enumeration district seems to be chock a block full of pubs and lodging houses.

Try The Sheffield History Website, there are hundreds of pubs listed on there.

Do you also have the newspaper reports from 10 Feb 1902 regarding the non fatal stabbing of Henry HUMBERSTONE at the Three Horse Shoes, this describes him as landlord.

In the 1891 Census 27-29 Waingate was unoccupied as were numbers 9 to 25.

In Kelly's Directory of West Riding of Yorkshire, 1881. [Part 2: Places L-Y] (image 557, page 1156) John Tyrer & Co., Wine Merchants, are at 27 & 29 Waingate. In the directory 27 & 29 are just before Bridge Street on the west side of Waingate, which on the 1890 Town Plan is the Three Whitesmiths Public House.
