Hi Lillibet
Yes - that looks like the same one that I have. I was wondering what his father was a dealer in - I thought it was 'left goods' which made me think he was perhaps some sort of pawn broker???
I have found a Hugh Carlon on the 1851 census living with his wife Anne in Canongate Edinburgh as a victualler. On William's death certificate he is shown as living at 5 Steel Street, Glasgow. I haven't yet found him on the 1861 census, but in 1871 he is back in Burnets Close, Canongate, Edinburgh where he is living with his wife 'Catherine', six children between the ages of one and eighteen, plus a servant, and he is shown as a furniture dealer.
Are they one and the same Hugh Carlon? I have no idea until I do some more searching for the 1861 census and/or death of Anne, the wife shown on the 1851 census. I know ages can be misleading, but the 1851 census shows him as 28 and Anne 35 (!) and 47 on the 1871 census.
I feel some more detective work coming on!
But what an intriguing story?
Andy
