Edward/Ameila HURLEY - Norton/Clutton area
« on: Thursday 16 October 14 13:17 BST (UK) »
Hello lovely people.

You lot seem geniuses in finding people when they have a frequently mis-spelled name. I am hoping you can help me...  ;D

I am interested in Edward/Amelia HURLEY - which is frequently mis-transcribed as Early/Earley.

I am after a marriage record for them, as I would like to find Amelia's maiden name. I have lots of lovely census data from 1851/61/71/81, from which I can glean the following:

Edward Hurley b Bath St James c1821-1825.
Amelia (Hurley) b Midsomer Norton c1817-1823.

Children were:
Susanah 1847
Isabella 1849
Charlotte 1851
William 1854
Mary 1854
Tom 1858
Fanny 1860

All children born Midsomer Norton. So looking for their ages and the arrival of their 1st child I'd guess they were married somewhere between 1833 and 1847. They are the 8th generation I found to have been within an 5km radius of Timsbury, Somerset, so I would imagine their marriage is likely to be around that area of Somerset also.

Any info regarding their birth records or marriage record would be very gratefully received!

Many thanks!

That sounds very very very likely.

Thank you!

8 generations later, they are still in Midsomer Norton! :)

If you're researching in the Bath area in the 19th century you need to know about BathBMD

http://www.bathbmd.org.uk/index.php

It has several advantages over FreeBMD, one being that it lists the mother's maiden name in the birth index.  All the children you mention, and a couple more, are shown as born in the Midsomer Norton sub-district and with mother's maiden name Turner. (Susanna is listed as Sarah Susanna HERLEY)

The marriage index gives the exact partner - not just those on the same page - and the exact location. Edward EARLEY and Amelia TURNER were married in 1846 at St John the Baptist, Midsomer Norton.

Another very useful index for Somerset is FreeREG.

http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl

The emphasis is on pre-1837 registers but quite a lot of later ones are also covered, including marriages from Midsomer Norton. Edward and Amelia were married on 21 Feb 1846 and the entry gives both their fathers, Thomas Earley and Samuel Turner.
