Looking for leads/Brickwall
« on: Saturday 17 July 04 19:44 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm looking to trace the ancestors of my great grandfather. I've really hit a brick wall with him as knowbody alive knows for definite who his parents were.  He was born  illegitimate probably in South London in 1879 and died in 1953. We have a maybe on the 1901 census but don't know for sure. My Nan..his daughter is still with us but I don't think she can give any futher leads. Also the surname is Morgan and we don't know were for definite where he was born.

If there is any other  possible lines of research on this please let me know.

thanks
Mark

Useful advice can really only be given when you are able to give details. You should include names (forename and surname). Dates & places of events; facts as stated on any certificates.

If you can fill in some information then I'm certain you will receive some useful pointers.

According to the 1881 Census there were 987 Morgan births in 1879. You need to be more specific.
A copy of his daughter's birth certificate will give you the maiden name of his wife, so you then start searching the St. Cath's Index for a marriage. That certificate will give you an age so you can estimate a year of birth. It may also give you his father's name, even if he was illegitimate. Then it's back to the St Cath's Index for his birth and another certificate which will give you his mother's name.
Unfortunately there are no shortcuts.

Hi

I have all details of his wife and her family. I have a copy of Albert Morgans marriage certificate which gives " - Morgan" as his father. At aged 22  he married Rebecca Figgins aged 21 on the 25 Dec  1901, St Stephens Church Walworth.

Not ordered a birth certificate as you can imagine there were alot of Albert Morgans born in 1879.

Topsy, whats the St Cath's Index?

thanks
Mark

The St. Cath's Index is the register of all Births, Marriages and Deaths since 1837. It is what FreeBMD is attempting to make available online. "1837 Online" have a pay to view version, or most large Libraries have it available on microfiche.

I've just noticed that he married not long after the 1901 Census, so you could try looking at that for the address he was married from. It's a long shot and could take a while but it might work.

Does 49, Scylla Road, Walworth match?
In 1901 there was a morgan family living there although the son Albert's birth doesn't quite match.
Details:
George Morgan, Head (wid) aged 57, occ. Butcher, b. London, Newington
Jessie, dau.. aged 25, b. Camberwell
Hannah, dau., aged 19 occ. Assistant in Glass Shop, b. Walworth
Albert, son, aged 17 Hairdresser's ?, b. Walworth
Sidney, son, aged 15 occ. Meat Salesman Clerk, b. Walworth
Grace, dau., aged 12 b. Walworth.

Corrections. Albert's age should read 19 and Scylla Rd comes under Camberwell.
There was one other Albert Morgan b. Walworth on the 1901 Census but he is given as age 13. He was living at 8, Sandison St., Camberwell.

Thanks for looking up those census Topsy.

When they were married the address for both of them shows as 61 Villa Street, Walworth.

Trouble is I have Rebecca on the 1901 census as living with her sister and brother in law at number 5 New Winchester Street in Southwark. I guess she moved in with Albert at around the time of the wedding later in the year.

I don't think he ever knew or lived with his father. The possible match on 1901 for Albert I have is for 60 Launcelot Street Lamberth where there  is a boarder aged 21 living with  a family George Childs and wife Ann.

thanks
Mark
