How many more Generations before I can expect to find Slaves
« on: Monday 06 October 14 10:09 BST (UK) »
I am researching my Father's Jamaican side of the family for the past 7 years and am not getting very far.  I think I have just found the death records for his Grandmother (my Gt Grandmother).  If they are correct she was born in St Elizabeth in 1879.  Can anyone tell me how many more generations further back can I expect to go before I find slaves.  I dont know anything about Jamaican history, when slavery was abolished etc, and all help will be much appreciated.

I'm no expert, just done a little reading in relation to one of my ancestor's second husband. I found this website very helpful, with a general history on the home page and a good data base to search.

Oh and I think slavery was abolished in Jamaica in 1834, but the slaves had to keep working for their "owners" as apprentices. Actual "freedom" didn't happen till around 1838.
