1851 census look up Wright please
« on: Thursday 30 June 05 21:14 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am researching my maternal Great Grandfather's family and desperately need some assistance. My Great Great Grandfather was Alfred Wright born 1847 in St Georges ( not sure which one!) Middx. He married a Harriet Susanna (Potter?) from Frittenden in Kent c1870. Alfred is, I think, on 1861 census as Bugler in R.E. Barracks at Brompton. I would like info on his parents and siblings if possible, not sure but think they may still be in london area for 1861 etc censuses. Can find other Wright family on 1881 census where father is CAO Surv C Pensioner aged 43 (Alfred would be 34 at this time) and 2 of his sons were in Bedford Ordnance Survey Office in 1901 census. Could they be related, possibly Alfred's older brother and nephews??

Hope you can help, thankyou

Is that him on Freebmd birth registered June 1847 Gt George Southwark??

Might be worth sending for a certificate.  It would give parents and an address.

Or better still get his marriage certifcate which will give his fathers name.

At least someone might look up the South London area for him but there might be a lot of Alfred Wrights on the census.

On Freebmd There is also a marriage of Harriet Susannah Potter Chelsea 1869.  Unfortunately there is a husband missing from the list.  It might be a good idea to check 1837online for the marriage.
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
Norfolk: Gooch, Loveday, Lake, Betts
Suffolk: Gooch, Crosby, Turner
Hampshire: Laws, Burrows
Kent: Beer
Jersey: Barette, de Gruchy
East London: Middleton, Gower, O'Farrell, Smith, Weston

Hi Sylviaann
Thankyou for your assistance in tracing Alfred Wright. Having looked on the marriage returns for 1847 it would appear that there is an Alfred Wright which shows born in
St Georges Sth, this could be Southwark and subsequent census returns have been incorrect in assuming the abbreviation was for Hanover Square. I think that the Harriett Susannah Potter you have traced is his wife as their first son was born c1870.

Many thanks for the info, I'll keep you posted. :)
