Birth Record
« on: Sunday 28 September 14 22:57 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I feel like a bit of a pest, but not sure where else to look as I think I have exhausted all of my sources to discover the answers I have been looking for.
I have been looking for the birth record of Mary Stretford, daughter of William Stretford & Susannah, his wife.  I think she was born about 1815(ish).  She married Philip Mason in Manchester in 1837. Lived in Brinnington, Cheshire in 1838,  I know she had 1 son in Sculcoates, Hull at her parents house in 1843. 1841 census shows here there but under maiden name, family are shown as not of that county. She had twins in 1846 in Marple, Cheshire again Philip was the father.

I have looked on FindMyPast, Ancestry, Family Search and BMDs all drawing a blank :(.

Similarly I cannot find birth record of her Father William Stretford ( i believe late 1790) or marriage record to Susannah (maiden name unknown).

So if any of you kind people has some magic source of Info that may shine a light, i certainly would appreciate it.

Thank you.

I have found a birth for a Mary A Stretford in Lancashire 1814, birth qtr 3, District Warrington, mothers surname: Hardman. Vol 8c page 433

I cannot find a marriage for her father & mother though so this could be a long shot. I hope this helps.

That is for a birth in  1914;  civil registration of births began in July 1837 before that you need to search for baptisms.

That will teach me to multi task & use my phone  ;D

I can't seem to locate any of them unless I am assuming there could be a misspelling of the surname or a variant?

Hi, thankyou both for looking for me.  I have had a thought though on the Philip & Mary's marriage cert it says of this parish (manchester) so maybe i need to look in the Manchester parish records ?

Hi,

Have you found her on any census records and does she give the same birthplace on each one?

"Of this parish" on a marriage certificate just means they were resident there at the time; not necessarily born there.

Hi Nanny Jan,

The only census i can find her on is the 1841 one, where she is present at her parents address in sculcoates, hull.  For all members of the family its shows "not born in this county.  Interstingly she is down as Stretford & not Mason (married in 1837) & her children or 1838 & 1839 are not listed, but i suspect there is a chance of infant death (there is a listing for a william mason, who i believe is her 2nd born son in 1839 showning as died later in 39.

I have found a record on Yorkshire BMD and now have the death cert for a mary mason in 1850 who died in the same area as her parents, however it shows her as single at time of death.  This mary does fit the age bracket.  Her death in 1850 might also explain why i found my grt grt grandad, Joseph Mason, in the sculcoates poorhouse on the 1851 census!  So its a bit of a tangled web and has been for me for about 2yrs now :(

Any sign of Philip Mason on the census? What was his occupation?

No sign of him in hull, there are a couple of Philip masons in the Stockport area in 41 but i cant prove either way. Like Mary Stretford, I cannot find a birth record for him either or record of parents as its 2 neighbours from Brinnington that are the witnesses on the marriage Cert.  He was a cotton spinner. The 61 census shows 2 Philip Masons in stockport, one married to a Catherine and had another family. showing as a landlord very close to another Mill. The other if i recall correctly is listed alone as a labourer again in a multi occupancy house.  My theory is Mary died in 1850, Joseph was placed in the hull poorhouse, Philip remarried and had a second family with Catherine. but its just a theory :(
