1861 Census Whitstable

There was  Noah's Ark, thought to have been a public house in Canterbury Rd.

On the 1861 Census it gives Noah's Ark, Road.

Then a long run of people, all living Road.

Next named property is Clapham Hill Farm

My question is what Road, or was there a road simply named Road ?

Can you include the 1861 reference plus the name of at least one person on the return so we can have a look at it.  Only FindMyPast has address search on the 1861

I'm on FindMyPast, but can't get the address search to work, here's what I have,

Family member last name   SPRATT
Family member first name(s)   MARTHA, ELLEN, MATILDA, JOSEPH, GEORGE, EMMA, FREDERICK, ALICE

Trying to identify the actual address, hoping, as you do, that it may still be there.

The page with the Spratts starts with Noahs Ark then just shows Road

If you flip back to the preceding page - above Noahs Ark the address again is just Road

I know, , I've been backwards and forwards so many times, looking for clues, even tried cross ref. 1871 with somebody who looked as though they might not be so transient as most, the Miller, but he'd moved back from wence he came, thought the name of the 'road' might show on that census, needless to say, no luck.

The wonders of google show us a Noah's Ark pub currently sited at 83 Canterbury Road, Whitstable.

However, the pubs history website gives a list of traders in Whitstable taken from Melville's 1858 directory of Kent (http://pubshistory.com/KentPubs/Whitstable/traders.shtml).  This gives one William Blaekman (sic) as proprietor of Noah's Ark Beer Shop situated on Borstal Road.

Back to google, it would appear that there is no longer a Borstal Road, but there is a Borstal Avenue & a Borstal Hill listed.  They are less than a mile from Canterbury Road.

Does any of this help at all?

Thanks for all your effort, what is really perplexing me is the address of just Road, had assumed it was really Canterbury Road, but you know what they say about assumption  , plus can prove to be a blind alley.

Read that Whitstable is notorious for strange street numbering, so that adds to the frustration, have the same family 1871 at 35 Essex St, street viewed it, but of course if its been all change over the years, might not be the same house.

Head was a blacksmith, no joy pinpointing that either, Canterbury and Essex run parallel so perhaps the forge was in that area.

If you look on the 1st page you can see a description of the route that's being followed which may help with pinpointing the road

Not sure if you get that page on FindMyPast but it is on Ancestry so let me know if you can't and I'll have a look. I'd do it now but really should be working
