Gorrick/Tierney/Knee/Mantle
« on: Friday 19 September 14 10:56 BST (UK) »
The family I am researching is Joseph Mantle, Mary Ann Hulks & Daniel Knee:
I am looking for information or documentation of Fathers for children Amelia Emilie Gorrick Knee and her daughter Violet Emily Maude T Knee. I am so confused and just can't seem to figure this one out.  I have looked at Ancestry & Google and in many cases it mentions Albert Gorrick father to Amelia Emilie, sometimes referred to as Emilie. And her daughter Violet - there has been mention that the "T" in her name could be "Tierney" and that her father could be Patrick Tierney.

On reading the book "And The women Should Not Weep" by Elva Dade - it is suggested that Daniel Knee's brother George is in fact the father of Amelia Emilie Knee - he, changing his name to cut ties with family in UK and marrying under the name of Albert Gorrick.  There is no mention of the name "Tierney" (or I have not found it) being father to Violet.  Elva Dade suggests that P C Gorrick is the father.

Hoping I can get some answers.
Barbara

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

It would be helpful if you could give some dates, plus tell us what you have actual documentation for (birth certs, parish registers of christenings etc).
If the people concerned were illegitimate and no father is named on survivimg documents (birth cert, christening etc) that you will never know who their father was. Whilst you may guess based on middle names the child is given, it will be no more than a guess. The name may have been chosen for all manner of reasons (surname of a family who was particularly helpful during a difficult time for example) and not necessarily the name of the father - indeed she may decidedly NOT want to remember the father in this way!  So it is not reliable, indeed some would say not fair, to name someone as the father without any survivinmg document on which he is named as such.

A tree on Ancestry gives birth details for Violet as:
1st March 1879 at Maitland, NSW, Australia.

And Amelia Emily Gorrick Knee is shown:
27th April 1859, at Maitland.

I will ask a mod to move this thread to an Australian board.

Hi Barb

It appears Violet used the surname TIERNEY for her first marriage.
