Other members family trees on findmypast?
« on: Tuesday 16 September 14 20:50 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone ive been a member of both ancestry and findmypast now for a few years, the ability of seeing other members trees on ancestor if very simple and its a great way to find photos of your ancesters and other articles such as certs. Although I cannot see if you can see and search other members trees and photos on find my past? Is it me being blind or can you see other members photos and trees on findmypast? regards

I dont think that you can see other member's trees on FindMyPast, I've never seen any mention of it.

Wouldn't FindMyPast trees be the same as Genes Reunited trees since they are the same company? No one gets to see my GR tree without my permission. As for Ancestry public trees, many people here comment on how unreliable they are, and that's my experience too.

Hi Folks

This seems to be a recent feature of FindMyPast. There is a tab marked "My family tree" with sub-tabs "View all trees" and "Create a tree".  Further exploration suggests you can upload a gedcom or create tree from scratch. These can be public or private.
The "View all trees" does not produce any results. Nor does there seem to be a way of searching specific names in the trees. This suggests that no one has used this feature, or if they have, they are keeping their trees private. Or maybe FindMyPast will not activate "View all trees" until they have a sufficient number in the database.

Anyone thinking about using this feature should read the Terms and Conditions first.

You can share your tree if it is public, there's just no way of searching trees on the site yet. This blog tells you what to do:

Thanks Pootle for posting the link to my blog.

Yes, we have built extensive (but not unique) privacy features into the Findmypast Family Tree. And these are similar to most of the other sites too. Some elements are still in development (such as searching for tree matches), but here is a list of the privacy options you can have.

The tree can be set to public or private. This has pretty much the same definition as found on other tree websites.

Public means that anyone who has a link to your tree can view the details. You cannot default to Show Living AND Public. But you can set this option on a per user basis through the Tree Shares list.

Private means that other users will be able to search for a tree match, but will require your permission to view the detail. This is identical to Genes Reunited as we have at the moment.

There are other privacy elements that are worth noting. Any fact, event, note, source can be set to private, and these will NEVER show to other users when they are giving access to view your tree.

Where Hide Living is set, then all details about that person are removed from the view, and the only indication is of a male or female person, and their name is changed to Hidden. So you can see the shape of a family group, but no more.

This also applies to family facts, such as marriage, etc. If either person is still living, the details are not shown.

If you want to follow the progress of the Findmypast family tree, then do dip into my blog http://pgmoir.wordpress.com/ . We were one year old this week, and I believe certainly something to take a look at, if you haven't already tried it. And any suggestions are always welcome.

I gather you work for FindMyPast, Mr Moir. On balance, the examples on your blog do seem to be an improvement on Genes Reunited, and the privacy options, particularly regarding photos and documents, seem to be an improvement on Ancestry.

But as you say, the project is in its infancy, so there won't be many trees to search yet. Have you considered making the gedcoms on GR, which is part of the same group, available in this way? I have no objection so long as my tree remains private, but perhaps you'd need to let each member decide whether to opt-out, or even opt-in? And what about the "dead" trees, whose owners can no longer be contacted?

Chris
