My 6 x grandfather was Phillip Pudney born 1842
 I know is he was born in Lexden Colchester Essex.
He moved to Linlithgow and married Catherine Harvey October 1879. He died in Linlithgow. 1897
My grandfather Phillip  Kitchener Pudney Ferguson insisted we were related to Lord Kitchener. Mums name is Phyllis Kitchen er Pudney Ferguson.
Can anyone help me obtain more imformation

if the Joseph & family I found on the 1851 is the correct family then Joseph's occupation of pensioner suggests he was in the army.

There's a service record for a Joseph Pudney b 1799 in Fordham, Essex. He served in the Black Watch regiment for 4 years from 1813-1817 until the loss of his right eye due to opthalmia(?).

Baptism on the freereg site 31/07/1791 - www.freereg.org.uk for a Joseph John Pudney in Fordham, son of James &  Mary. Looks like there are several different Pudney couples baptising children

It would be worth ordering the marriage certificate for Phillip from the GRO website (it's about £10).
That would confirm whether Joseph is the father of Phillip.

If it is Joseph, then the following are the details:

Joseph married hannah Balls 21/7/1822 at Copford. Witness sarah balls (I think she's hannah's sister). Their children were Joseph 29/6/1834, Matilda 12/6/1836 - 21/5/1857, Philip 9/2/1840 and caroline 14/1/1843. Joseph was a pensioner by the time philip came along! All these were baptised in Stanway, which is near Lexden and colchester.

Hannah's parents were james and hannah ball. Hannah was born 16/2/1800 and was buried 28/12/1857. I think Hannah's mother may have died young, as there are also children to a james and sarah Ball: Ann and Charlotte.

Joseph's parents were james and mary pudney. He was born Joseph John 31/7/1791 and buried 29/11/1881 aged 91 years!! The notes next to his burial say that he fought at Waterloo and was in the 74th foot. He died in the workhouse, but not as a pauper. I did read somewhere that some people used the workhouse for medical reasons rather than destitution, as there was nowhere else to go to get treatment. His siblings were: John 22/3/1805, Hannah 26/2/1808 and sarah 8/9/1793.

There are several other pudneys baptising children there. It would seem that Joseph senior had siblings and cousins: James, John, Joseph.

Definitely worth getting the certificate to confirm Joseph as the father.

It would be interesting to know if all the people on here were right about him! 😉
