1881 census lookup please - MARSHALL

Still seeking my great-granny, Sarah Ann Marshall, born 1862 in Manchester; the only possibility is she could have been a maid with the Skelmerdine family in Nelson Street. What options are available now? Suggestions welcome.

Then there is the Sarah who is with the Skelmerdine family - it is possible for her to have been recorded at both addresses if she happened to be at work when then enumerator called there and then at home when one called there. If you had more details of her family you could confirm this.

Hi Gillj,
Thank you so much for this. I would like to think this was great-granny's family; the problem is, her parents (or at very least her mother) were Welsh. I had wondered whether the 1881 entry was wrong, and it should be North Wales rather than Nottinghamshire! But now you have confirmed it for me with the 1871 entry, they can't both be wrong. The only possibility is that she is the daughter of Henry's first wife who could have died, I will check BMD. The maid at the Skelmerdine home could perhaps be an orphan of Welsh parents.

To Confuse things More in the 1891 Census the Same Family are Living at 26 St Dwals? Street Manchester..But all are Stated as Born Manchester?

Hi Iria,

Thank you so much for your help. This could be promising because I had always heard (as a small child, on rare trips to England to see my grandmother), that Sarah's father had been a POLICEMAN! Sometimes the enumerators did make mistakes as regards place of birth, this may be one. I will definitely check it out. Thanks again. Cheers, Jos.
