Relative died in Brookwood Asylum, buried where
« on: Friday 05 September 14 17:51 BST (UK) »
Having recently watched the programmes on asylums I re checked a death certificate for husbands ggm Grace Sorrell, she died in Brookwood asylum in 1895 of the 'General paralysis of the insane'
Grace had been arrested for trying to commit suicide,by throwing herself in a pond in Cobham, surrey then taken to Holloway prison then sent to Epsom Union for 3 days and then to Brookwood.
What I'm asking is where would she have been buried? I have some documents arrived today from Surrey History Centre and it says her husband could contribute to her maintenance there. Could he have brought her back to London to be buried? She was born in Somerset and I think her family all moved to London, another track I've gone down today. Grace around 1875 went to New Zealand but I think she met George on board the ship ,he was a sailor and they came back together,I aready have them on the 1881 census..... so much to look for now..
anyway any help with the burial greatly welcome.got to go out now and do something else to give my head a rest.

Brookwood Asylum would have routinely used Brookwood Cemetery for their burials.

Unfortunately the cemetery charge for look-ups and their digitised records were destroyed in 2012.

The Surrey History Centre at Woking may be able to help you further if they can locate her patient files

If he did bring her back to London, we would need to know which part as there is no central database for burials.

Thank you, I did wonder about the Brookwood cemetry as that seemed logical to me, I have her documents from SHC it includes 3 items but does not say where she was buried.
I only know the family lived at Victoria street in Westminster, will have to do some more digging.
Thanks again

It would seem sensible for the family to travel to Brookwood on the dedicated train service from Waterloo than to bring her back to London.

By 1895, all the churchyards were closed and burials in municipal or privately owned cemeteries were the norm.

Westminster's cemetery was at Hanwell, the others close by being Marylebone Cemetery at Finchley, Paddington Old & New and Kensal Green.

There's a topic here which might be helpful

and a similar one here for Surrey
