Hi
Thanks so much for your assistance in trying to find my Arthur Carter.
I do find the Parish and district system in England really hard to follow.  Here are some extra bits and pieces that I have picked up along the way.

When he joined the Militia in New Zealand in 1864 it stated that he has born at St Pauls, Birmingham, Warwickshire (about 1845) and is a Protestant - see below from 4th Waikato Regiment Nominal & Descriptive Roll
His death certificate states that his fathers name was Arthur and mother Charlotte, however, his father was presumably a butcher in England and the Thomas (father) in the 1861 census was a butcher.
Arthurs 1915 Death Certificate sates he was 73 years (therefore born 1842)
Arthurs Marriage Certificate in 1867 (in NZ) states he was 22 years (therefore born 1845) and
the Arthur in the 1861 Census is born about 1849!!

Arthurs death certificate states his name was Arthur Felix (although the Felix looks as though it’s been written in later as in smaller print) and also states he was born in Tasmania (Australia), however, his Militia records disprove this and Tasmanian BMD records also have no record of him as been born in Tasmania.  There is no record of the Coventry Arthur Carter (or his parents or any of his siblings) from the 1861 Census on the 1871 Census which would tie in with the family leaving England to go to Tasmania or somewhere in Australia (I have no record of the rest of the family coming to NZ at this stage).  However, I have since traced this Arthur Carter to Canada. As Gail points out all my Arthur Carters childrens name tie in so well with this family!

I don't have a correct birth date just what I have calculated approx from death/marriage certs and militia records.
I have seen the Ancestry tree stating Arthur son of Samuel & Jane but again this Arthur can be traced through later census records in England so can't be correct and I have tried contacting the owner of that family tree but no success.
I wasn't worried when I found the fathers name Thomas when I found the Arthur on the 1851 and 1861 census as I also thought informant could have the name wrong especially as he was a butcher and the wife was Charlotte - why did this lot move to Canada!! or I would have my mystery solved!!

Would Arthur have stated he was born in Warwickshire on his militia records if he wasn't? The person filling out his death cert might not have know where he was born but knew he lived in Tasmania.  A man in NZ who researches "Fencible" soldiers states that Arthur was the son of a Fencible - which could be why they were in Tasmania as the father was military.  Perhaps his father/mother were born in Warwickshire and that's why he says he was??

The only explanation I can give is that his father was in the military & stationed in B'ham at the time of his birth but didn't register it & then moved on possibly to Tasmania before the 1851 census.
Or Arthur's re-invented himself & is actually someone else.
Or he was illegitimate & is Arthur someone else & his mother married a Carter & moved before the 1851 census (although I've looked for any illegitimate Arthur's & can't find one).

Hi
Thanks so much for your assistance in trying to find my Arthur Carter.
I do find the Parish and district system in England really hard to follow.

At the start of Civil Registration in England & Wales was divided into Registration Districts, each with a Superintendant Registrar.
Each RD contains a number of parishes - some districts only had a few parishes; some had loads!

Over the years, RD's come and go, as they are reorganized depending on the population.

BMD's indexes (such as on FreeBMD) will only show a Registration District, and not a parish.
Onlt the certificates them selves, or an original parish register entry, will show the parish name.

Arthur CARTER married Margaret O`CONNOR, 1867 in Hamilton. I did not get a death entry for Arthur!, why I have no idea?! A bad mistake !
Their son, Arthur I remember as a child, known as pop CARTER, lived in Otahuhu, corner of Atkinson Ave and Church St. He had built this house of selected kauri.
I have been searching for information for many years with little result. I do not recall my mother or grandmother mentioning "Felix" which I have noted in the NZ deaths.
Arthur CARTER married Jessie Elizabeth CAMPTON in Ak on the 13 Oct 1897, Ponsonby, 4 children.
My grandmother, Gladys Alma CARTER is the last child, siblings being....Arthur Ivan, Elizabeth May, Lilian Annie.
Any information on this CARTER family would be most appreciated.

Do you have their burial records in Otahuhu?
They say Arthur Felix Carter was born in Tasmania (but that tallies with the other records)
Margaret Carter is there too, hers says she was born in Hobart
They both died in 1915 and they are both Catholic, address Luke road

Have you found Margaret (O'Connor) Carter in the Tasmanian Bdm for Hobart?

Hi bmint
My Grandmother was Mary Jane (Minnie) Carter the daughter of William Carter (and brother to your Arthur Carter).  She married Charles (Pat) O'Hanlon.
My mother Mary Colgan (nee O'Hanlon) knew Gladys Carter and has a photo of her at her wedding. She tells me she was married to a Mr Derbyshire and then remarried a Reg McDonald when he died and she had three children Alma, Dorothy (who is about mum's age) and a boy but she can't remember his name.  She said her family used to visit quite regularly in the early days.  She thinks a relation of Gladys lives in Waiuku but is unsure who.  We live in Pukekohe.  Is this your family?
Would be great to get in touch if it is!
