WILLIAM LORD - Whitehaven - birth 1804
« on: Monday 01 September 14 02:21 BST (UK) »
I am wondering if someone can help with regards to a William Lord, born in 1804 in Whitehaven.  I am trying to find his parents.

He married a Harriet Wedlock in 1830, they had a son also William, in 1831.  Both of these people were born in Watchett Somerset.

William senior was first a 'mate', then a 'master mariner' - I am assuming his work took him down to the Bristol area. (This is where the rest of the Lord clan were born and bred.)

Any info greatly appreciated.

Hi

Do you know he was born actually in the town of Whitehaven?  Was this from a later census?

If this is the case there aren't many possible churches for a baptism and I could have a look for you.  If it's just the area it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack!

What is the earliest actual reference you have?

I'll have a look actually in the town when I go to the archives.

Best wishes

What is the earliest actual reference you have?

Hi Emms,
The earliest Census reference I found was the 1850 Census when he was living in Bristol (Redcliffe). (With his wife Harriet, and their son William.)

I did see his Certificate to renew his Master Mariner (that was also issued in Bristol) where it stated he was born in 1804 in Whitehaven.  Do you think I can find it now? Sorry, I'm in a bit of a muddle at the moment due to some serious health issues with  my Mum (she is a Lord descendant), who is in NZ (I'm in Canada, so feeling a little helpless).

He (William) was the Captain (I have been told by other family members) of the Romulus that went to New Zealand in 1862 - I don't think he did much after that.

Sorry it's so sketchy.

Please don't worry if it is too vague, but thank you anyway.

Hi Sally

Don't worry.  You're welcome!

I've still got notes scattered between two towns.  I can have a good go with that clearer information.

It must be really worrying being so far from your Mum.  I hope things get a bit easier.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Take care.

Best wishes

hi

Just a quickie to say I've not forgotten.

We've had a few distractions here.

It might be a few days yet but I will be visiting soon.

Take care.

Thanks for the 1841 info - keyboard86 :)

I spent some time this weekend on Ancestry UK (another free search weekend - yay!).  Finally found the Mariner Certificate for William that was issued in 1850 which shows his date of birth as 6 January 1804, Whitehaven.  (It showed 28 years service).  It was renewed again in 1871 after 48 years in the trade.

Thanks Emms - my Mum is as well as can be expected - just keeping fingers, eyes and everything crossed for now.  Thank you so much for taking a look, it's very much appreciated.

Hi

Well done for finding the birth.  Brilliant!  I'll see what I can see   I might get in tomorrow.  I'm trying to get away to see someone who's not well as well, but meantime I'll see what I can see.

Hoping for the best for your Mum.  It is hard when they get ill for you as well as her.

Take care.

Best wishes
