Hi John

The list of institutions included on the 1901 census might be a good place to start looking for childrens' homes and workhouses around those dates.

Hi John
I'm following similar lines... My great grandparents were both placed in orphanages in Southampton around start of 1900s. I believe my g.grandfather was in the Seamans Orphanage at Tremona Court, which is near the present site of the general hospital. My g.gran was in a Dr Barnardos orphanage I think. Could these be the places you're after? Tremona Court appears in old maps of Shirley Warren/Redbridge and Hants archives have a photo of some of the boys there from 1912 (not seen the photo). By the way the names are HAYTER and HURSON just in case by some massive coincidence we might be looking for the same people  :D

Hi Jason, thanks for those leads - did you manage to get details of the children in Tremona Court / Dr Banardos. ?  I have no details of any specific place or dates. The story behind my research is as follows. I believe my grandmother Evelyn CLEMENT born 1897, her sister Winifred (1894) & brother Herbert (1900) were placed in an orphanage/home after their mother died in 1904 & their father was away ??? (possibly in debtor's prison). In 1907/08 he mysteriously reappears & claims his children, at same time announcing their family name was changed by deedpoll to WRIGHT. This occurred at Southampton Town Hall.

Hi John
here are a few links

Tremona court appears on the 1871 map of Southampton at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ grid ref 439758,114531

In my earlier post http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,9309.0.html,  Elizabeth Revel gave the location of the Barnados home

If you search the Hants archive catalogue at http://calm.hants.gov.uk/DServeA/search.htm for finding number TOP286/2/336 you'll find "Southampton Pictorial, Page 39 - Bitterne Scouts Bugle Band, 1921; Boys of Southampton's Seaman's Orphanage, 1910; ..." Next time I'm there I will dig out the picture, but I believe my ggf was long gone by 1910

Let me know if you have any luck - so far the above is about all I know!
Cheers
Jason

Hi there

Just been reading some past posts and noticed that you have managed to help some one locate an orphanage in Southampton.  Wondered if you had seen my request that I had posted regarding a girls orphanage in mid 1930's .  My mum only knew it as the "girls home" but thinks it was on Ober Road ? and it may have been called Morden? obviously time has passed and mum's memory isn't too great .  I have a newspaper photo of my mum taken in the grounds of the home about 1939 and would like to track down the original , also mum would like to know what happened to the home.  I have posted an appeal on the pages but not too helpful!

If you can help in anyway I would be very grateful.
thank you for your time.

Hello Harvey

Sorry I cannot help you more; it was Jason Hotchkiss who gave me some leads, for my quest to locate an orphanage where my family members were installed in early 1900's.

You could try contacting the Southampton archives or Hampshire archives for info of your mother's "home".  Searching  briefly through Google I found a girl's orphanage in Kings Park Road, Southampton.

regards

John
