GEOGHAN/GAGAN
« on: Wednesday 29 June 05 12:34 BST (UK) »
Anyone else researching the name of GEOGHAN

I`m trying to find any information about my gt grandfather`s family he was born in Ireland abt 1841, I wonder when he came to England, & did his family also come there?

There are most likely variations in the spelling of the name.
gt grandfather was Stephen Geoghan and he married Louisa Paddison in 1866, Stafford
n 1881 his wife  children were in the Stafford workhouse, the children except for the eldest son Patrick, were sent to Canada in 1885
Would love to know what happened to Patrick, cannot find any information on him after 1885

The surname was changed to GAGAN when the children ewre sent to Canada
my grandfather married there in 1894 and left Cnada in 1900. his sister Grace also married in Ontario & died there.
But, what happened to Laura the other sister, did she marry & remain in Cnada or did she also leave, cannot trace her after 1891, when she wa still in Ontario & unmarried.

If anyone else is researching Gagan, have they come across Laura?

Hello,

Have just joined the list, are you aware of Josi Birbeck who runs
the Geoghegan ONS site?

Regards - Simon

I don't know anything about your Laura but I have come across Geoghegans in my husband's family tree.

Charles Geoghegan is a hatter and appears on the 1871 Census for Liverpool.  He is then 78 (born in Tallamore) and is living with:
wife Bridget (57 born in Roscommon)
and children:
John (19 born in Liverpool)
Mary (17 born in Athlone)
Bridget (5 born in Sligo).

I assume that the 57 for Bridget is a misreading of 51 or that the younger Bridget is a grandchild.  My database suggests that the older Bridget is a Cunningham but I haven't recorded my reasoning.

I spent some time looking for John's birth.  There was a likely one in the June quarter of 1851 but it wasn't a match.  The death of Charles may occur in the Sep quarter of 1873 but I haven't requested this certificate yet.

I did find a baptism of a Bridget Gaughran to John & Catherine in Loughcrew and Moyloughy.  The witnesses were Charles and Bridget Gaughran.

I haven't done very much on this family.  I'm not very familiar with Irish sources and I find the many different spelllings a bit frustrating.

The younger Bridget marries Michael Corcoran in 1884 and has a daughter Winifred ...

This may be grist to the mill for someone.

Hi,
Thanks for the information, however, like uourself I too get a bit bewildered by the numerous spellings of the name, and unfortunately have so little information apart from the name of my gt grandfather which was Stephen Geoghan, his father recorded on the marriage cert was Lawrence Geoghan, that is the only information I have.

I have no idea of how many there were in the family or what the mother`s name was, so have very little to go on with, nor do I know exactly where Stephen came from, the only place of birth given was on the 1901 census and that was Galway. He disappeared from after 1871 until 1901, I can only assume he may have returned to Ireland deserting his wife and family, they ended up in the workhouse, my grandfather and his sisters being sent to Canada in 1885, there weas also another son Patrick, but I do not know what became of him either, he was not sent to Canada with the others and may have left the workhouse before them, I still have research to do on that eventually.
