Norval family of Thornton/Markinch
« on: Friday 16 July 04 21:34 BST (UK) »
Dear Folks:

I have a family from Thornton Markinch I am researching.
My gr.gr.grandfather was Thomas Andrew Norval born 23 May, 1827.  He lived with his grandfather, Joseph Norval in Thornton in 1841.  His brother, Joseph was born circa 1826 in Prestonpans and in 1841 he was also living with the grandfather.

Thomas crossed the ocean in May of 1851, leaving Liverpool and landing in New York City aboard the ship "Aberdeen."  He ended up living in Hammond, New York State where he died sometime between 1870-80.

His parents were Charles Norval and Agnes Anderson, married in 1822 in Kirkcaldy.
Charles' parents were Joseph Norval and Janet Cree of Thornton, Markinch, married in Dysart in 1793. Their children were:

Margaret b. 1795 who married a Peter Laing of Gallatown.  I have no further information on this family and hope to make a connection with someone who has some data.

Charles..my gr.gr.gr.grandfather died before 1832.  Have no record of his death.

John b. 1799 married Marg. Hogg Johnston (I think) and lived on the Isle of Skye at Lynedale house (Snizort) Had at least one son Joseph b. circa 1837 in Leslie.(?)

Janet Norval b. 1802 married Alexander Kilgour  in 1824 and emigrated with the many children circa 1850 to Clarendon Twp. Pontiac Cty. Quebec Canada.

If anyone is researching this family, I'd love to hear from you.

Sue

I am a Kilgour living in England but moved from Fife, Scotland in 1965. Have been recently trying to do the male line backwards from my dad as he passed away 18 months ago and nostalga sets in for a while.
My Great Great Grandfather Henry Kilgour appears to have been born in 1802 from parents George Kilgour and Cecilia Gibson.
Henry was one of 4 brothers and 1 sister. One of those brothers was Alexander Kilgour born 1797 who appears to have married Janet Norval. They also appear to have had two children George in 1831 and Margaret in 1828, both children died aged 1 year.
I used a couple of credits up with Scotlands people and found a death certificate for a Charles Norval who died in Ayr in 1862, aged 67 which puts him at being born 1797, which I believe is the age of the Charles Norval of your family line. He may be your relative, or I may be wrong but the ages correspond and he is the only Charles Norval registered as dying in Scotland in that period. I have attached a copy of the death certificate if it is of any help.

PS.  On the Markinch burials site, George Kilgour when he died was buried alongside his grandson who died age 1, this is Alexander and Janets child. There is also a Joseph Norvall buried at Markinch in 1850 aged 82. May be one of yours. Have a look at the Markinch burials website.

A couple of items... I have discovered since I posted my response that I indeed was wrong!   :-[  and that the parents of Margaret Norval were indeed Joseph Norval and Janet Cree.

Diddy: Re the 19 Norvals listed on the Fife death index, I would be interested but not quite sure what "send your email by PM" means...

And Sue in Canada, I can fill in the blanks on Margaret marrying Peter Laing if you have not yet found the answer since your post of 2004.
