John Portlock born 1783
« on: Thursday 21 August 14 14:40 BST (UK) »
My sister-in-law's ggggrandfather was born in Birmingham in 1783. We know this from censuses and his Royal Marine attestation papers.
Any ideas on how to find out where and when he was baptised? We have no idea of who his parents were and there are quite a few Portlocks in Birmingham

Any help would be most appreciated

Hi Ruthie

Ancestry records only one John Portlock in Birmingham around that time, John, son of John and Elizabeth, baptised 27th August 1781 at Birmingham St Phillips.

Thanks Ellen

We might take another look at this; St Philip's is now the cathedral but it was a fairly new parish church around the time of John Portlock's birth and it's near the Gun Quarter (and we know JP became a gunmaker).

I'll report back if we have any developments

Church was built between 1711 and 1725, so not that new.

He is listed as a gun barrel maker on the 1841 and is it him in Wales in 1851 (Cardiff) as Greenwich pensioner and gun maker?

You should have a look on ancestry - there is a family tree on there with several sources, including a link to the National Archives Inland Revenue Death duty registers - looks like John's father John was also a gun barrel maker who died in 1806 - abstract of the will listed at TNA.

Hi ggg+ grandfathers were the Portlocks.  If you search for them in the gun directories of Birmingham you should find quite a bit of info.  I hope this helps.
