Hi Farolito78
My husband is descended from Ann Bishop's daughter Elizabeth who was born before she married James Mawby.
I don't know at this point whether James was Elizabeth's biological father.
I too have not found a baptism for James but he gives his father as Thomas Mawby when he and Ann Bishop married in 1849.
A Thomas Mawby married Rebecca Scotton of Ullesthorpe in Gilmorton in 1820 and they had 3 children baptised in Gilmorton, Joseph b. 1821, Sarah b. 1822 and Jane b. 1825. Rebecca was buried in Gilmorton in 1835.
Ann True (Trew) married a Thomas Cooke in Leicester St Margaret's in 1822 and they had a son George b. 1822 bp. 1823 bur. 1823 in Leicester St Margaret's and then a son Thomas b. 1826 in Gilmorton. Her husband was buried in Gilmorton in 1826 and their son Thomas seems to be buried there in 1837.
Why is this significant?
Because in 1839 Thomas Mawby, a widower married Ann Cooke a widow. It is this couple who are together on the 1841 census as Ann's mother Susan True is in the same household.
So Sarah with them in 1841 seems to be Thomas and Rebecca's daughter b. 1822, she married in 1844. It is important to note that this is not the same Sarah who married William Morley in Leicester in 1844 as she is the daughter of a Thomas and Charlotte baptised in Leicester in 1827 as he was a Woolcomber not a Framework Knitter. This Sarah married John Wood and is living in Gilmorton after her marriage.
I do not know about Jane. I wondered if perhaps Jane's baptism was actually for James and had been mistranscribed but the register image clearly says Jane and daughter.
I also wondered if the 1826 baptism for Thos Cooke might have been a mistranscription for James but definitely is Thos for Thomas and with the burial found in 1837 seems to rule out Thomas perhaps getting known later as James.
However this still doesn't solve the riddle as to who James is. Is he the child of Thomas and Rebecca and a stepson of Ann True/Cooke or really the son of Thomas Cooke and Ann True or perhaps did Ann have an affair with Thomas while his wife Rebecca was still alive after her husband died?
James's place of birth on the censuses is Gilmorton, his age is pretty consistent on the censuses giving a year of birth around 1826 but his death in 1876 and burial give an age of 54 which gives a yob around 1822.
My husband has some DNA matches with people descended from an Aaron Mawby, son of Richard Mawby. Aaron is a witness at James's marriage.
My husband doesn't have any DNA matches with any True's but does have DNA matches with those of Ann True mother Susannah Sleath's family, however this could also be down to him being descended from the Sleath family on another line.
He of course has DNA matches with those descended from James Mawby with the children he had with Ann Bishop but I still cannot be totally sure he is Elizabeth's father. It could be that my husband's DNA matches to Aaron Mawby relatives are a connection further back in the Mawby line through other families in Gilmorton.
I thought that the information would be of some use to you.
