James Tindal, died Graaff-Reinet, Cape Colony (South-Africa) 4 May 1838
« on: Tuesday 19 August 14 11:12 BST (UK) »
According to The Asiatic Journal and Monthly Register for British and Foreign India, China, and Australasia, vol. XXVII - New Series, September-December, 1838 (London: Wm.H. Allen and Co., 1838), p. 325, James Tindal, son of His Excellency the late lieutenant general Ralph Dundas (baron) Tindal, died at Graaff-Reinet, Cape Colony, South-Africa, on 4th May 1838, aged about 43. See attachment.

James Tindal was a Dutchman and his father a Dutch general. James lived in the island of Java (Netherlands East Indies) till the year 1829. He was still in that island in May 1829 and most probably left Java shortly afterwards.

I should like to know when and on board of what ship James Tindal came to the Cape and what he did for living in South-Africa and in Graaff-Reinet.

Should it be possible to find James' Death Notice (in Afrikaans: "Sterftekennis") in a South-African archive and get copies ?

Any help on these questions are very welcome. Many thanks in advance.

Hi Axonais,

I can't answer your question but I am curious, did James leave Java  with his wife Carolina Mathilda?

James entered Java in 1816 en lived in Soerabaija in 1819 being a clerk.
He marries Carolina on the 12Th of September 1824 at Soerabaija.
On the 14Th of July 1825 his son is born but dies at the same day.
Then in 1829  he is leaving Soerabaija with his wife and child, to Semarang and finally arriving in Batavia on the 3rd of May 1829.

Carolina died on the 16Th of June 1839 at Kediri, Java.

Hi Dauro,

Thank you for your reply. You seem to refer to James Tindal's biographical data that can be found in Nederland's Adelsboek [Dutch Peerage] 95 (2010) 237 and in the Javasche Courant. I knew these already for they can easily be found on the internet. As far as I can see from these sources his wife did not leave Java with him.

Do you happen to know more biographical data on James (with sources)? Would be very helpful !

Hi Axonais,

I haven't got any more information for you.
By searching I found a list of officers 1813-1924 where I come across a James Tindal (also Andreas Anthonius, Daniel, B.G., Franciscus Hendrikus, Jacobus George, Leonard Jean, Pelph Dundas and Willem Fredrik Tindal).

I still wonder why James left without his wife ( and child ), was it because he went into the military service, did he just abandon her or did he do both?

Hi again Dauro,

Could you be so kind as to post the exact source of the list of officers you mentioned? Is it accessible on the internet?

Daniel, Leonard Jean and Willem Fredrik Tindal you mentioned were James's brothers and Pelph [recte Ralph] Dundas Tindal his father.

Axonais.
